Just went there to get some bread and was there at the counter and saw this lady in front of me who was doing shopping for almost 2 weeks. She had plenty of stuff in her cart and the cashier asked her if you want to buy a bag. She wasn't familiar with it. So safeway, giants and all other grocery stores have started charging 5 cents or more for their bags. She started shouting at the cashier and eventually didn't end up getting anythin and left the cart like that. I thought how sad time it is that companies have started charging for bags. The economy or whatever is really fked up rite now.

The bags come from trees or crude and end up in landfills, how hard is it for people to carry their own ? Too spoilt, some folks ..

This encourages usage of recyclable bags and avoid a vast amount of trash being thrown in our eco-system. In Netherlands most of the supermarket charge good amount for carry bags. That forced us to carry our own bags while going for grocery.
ganeshran Posted January 12, 2012 Posted January 12, 2012 I carry my own jute bag most of the time even though most shops provide one for free. Some outlets like Landmark have started charging 5 -10 bucks for carry bags. Fair enough I'd say given the environmental implications of plastic.

Most consumers have a habit of using plastic carrybags just one time to carry stuff home and then throwing them away. In the old days when plastic carry bags were not popular, people used to carry thier own bags to go shopping. That practice should be encouraged now. No better ay than to charge extra for plastic carry bags.

However, to avoid such arguments what they can do is - "discount for not chosing to use plastic bags", instead of "charging extrafor using extra bags". This simple tactic has been tried and tested for ages, I wonder why the don't do it in this case - customers just do not want to pay even single extra penny, however they are more than happy to spend extra $$s on something they don't even need - in the name of discount.

Its mandatory now for stores in India too to charge money for bags. Its a goverment regulation now and is mandatory for all shop-keepers/stores to do this. This is to encourage people to bring their own bags and avoid new plastic bags. The companies had nothing to do with the decision, they are just forced to follow goverment order

In my town, which has a population of 5000, plastic bags have been completely banned for almost 8 years and only paper bags are used :icflove:

bulbul Posted January 12, 2012 Posted January 12, 2012 Today i bought couple of Shirts from Brand factory here in bangalore...they charged 5 rs for the Bag... but the Bag looked similer to what they used to give some time before the Bans and when no charges are there... dont know the Tickness of bags differed..but i ddidnt find much difference
