Ultimate_Game Posted January 15, 2012 Posted January 15, 2012 With the series done and dusted in emphatic fashion, we can now proceed to rating the Team India player's performances. Don't think the dead 4th Test will change the ratings much so here goes the ratings out of 10... Sehwag - 3. Got couple of starts at Melbourne and Sydney but couldn't go on. Fielding and fitness was below average and he may be on the decline as far as Tests go. Gambhir - 4. Got better as the series went on but other than couple of knocks (83 at Sydney and 30 odd at Perth) didn't do much. Dravid - 4. Has gotten old with reactions not as fast as they should be. Bowlers simply have to bowl straight at the stumps to bowl him out. Quite a galling way to fail for the man known as "The Wall", and continued to drop catches at slip. Tendulkar - 4. Did get 2 50s but didn't have anywhere the impact a player of his stature should have on the series of this magnitude. Whenever India needed a big knock from him - at Melbourne with India 214/2, at Sydney and at Perth - he flattered to deceive. Couldn't impose himself in any innings and that has been a story right from the Eng series, and continued to get out to the least impressive bowlers like Clarke and Starc. Time has come for him to bow out with dignity rather than pursue the 100th 100 milestone. VVS - 1. Looked like fish out of water. At the moment, he can't bat, can't field and can't run. Probably the most unfit sportsperson at the moment. Will be surprised if he plays another game for India. It was painful to watch him bat this series as he couldn't manage to get the ball off the square and didn't even bother to show any intent when he was at the crease. Kohli - 5. probably the brightest spot for India as far as batting is concerned. He kept getting better every innings he played. Looked clueless in Melbourne, played a few glorious shots in Sydney but got out too soon, but looked our best and most assured batsman on a difficult Perth pitch. Looked like scoring his maiden 100 before the lower order collapsed around him. Ashwin - 5. One of the few players who gave it all and at least showed the heart to put up a fight. Bowled well and got wkts at Melbourne but couldn't do much with the ball on a batting beauty at Sydney. Pity he couldn't get a chance to bowl on days 4 and 5 at Sydney due to our batsmen's incompetence. But with the bat he was a revelation and looked the most composed batsman and regularly got starts and managed a 50 as well. With him around the Indian lower order gets a bit of solidity and is one to be persevered with. Dhoni - 2. Didn't do much with the bat or as a captain. He probably couldn't have done much at Sydney and Perth, but he let the game slip at Melbourne by setting defensive fields for Australian tailenders and giving them way too many cheap runs which ultimately made the difference. Zaheer - 5. Was good with the ball in a few spells but couldn't finish off the Aussie tail. Was a liability with the bat and didn't even show he wanted to be out there while batting and support the batsman at the other end. Was embarrassing to watch him look scared, make room and flail at the ball while batting. With his fitness issues looks like he would be out of the Test team within a year or so. Ishant - 2. He simply doesn't get it that he needs to pitch it up to get wkts. It's galling to watch so much talent go waste but looks like he will be known as the "unlucky" one. He deserves all the ill-luck though with his inability to hit the right line and length consistently even though he has been around more than 4 years at the intl level. I guess it's time to move on from him. Umesh Yadav - 6. The only bright spark in the bowling department and one of the 3 positives for India after Kohli and Ashwin. He was fast and made life uncomfortable for Aussie batsmen and managed to get top order wkts. Need to learn how to bowl at the tail and take lower order wkts but showed enough talent, potential and attitude for him to be persisted with. Vinay - 0. Can't bat, can't bowl, can't field. Probably a sifarshi selection thanks to Srikkanth. Still can't believe Irfan wasn't selected ahead of him. If Ashwin had played at Perth, the game could have been a lot closer. Coaches, selectors and team management - 0. Couldn't get the bowlers to bowl the right lengths (especially Ishant), didn't bench Laxman in place of Rohit for the 3rd Test and played Vinay. Didn't even manage to come up with a batting strategy to put more pressure on Aussie bowlers. Don't really know what the coaches get paid for. Overall worse series than the Eng one and who could have believed that in the aftermath of the Eng series. Serious introspection is required as we paid the price for our selectors and board not having any transition plan for the seniors and the team looked old, jaded and over the hill. In fact it seemed as if it was a Seniors team on the field. Even if we had Shastri on the field I doubt he would have looked out of place in the team.

The only negatives were he wasn't as consistent in line and length as his Aussie counterparts with balls down the leg and sometime a bit too short. Plus he needs to learn to blow the tail away. But overall the find of the series for us along with Kohli.

Aaron wasn't anything special based on what we saw of him in odis and WI. Umesh is heads and shoulders better than Aaron. We missed someone like PK who could provide enough control for Umesh and Zak to attack and go for the kill.

Aaron is better in terms of accuracy and length he bowls which would have suited Aussie pitches more and he showed he could reverse the ball. How could you say he was not anything special, short memory, forgot he cleaned up England and the fifth match where he cleaned Alister Cook and turned the game on its heels. You forgot his bowling in in first ODI against WI. He went for runs in only one match and that too I feel because he suffered that back stress injury during the match that forced him to be out of the Aussie series. Umesh went for more runs than him in the matches he has played. Even Aaron took more wickets than Yadav in EPT as well. Especially his natural length which is fuller should have worked well for him here.

bharat297 Posted January 15, 2012 Posted January 15, 2012 Aaron from what I saw bowls too close to the stumps meaning when he bowls outside off it continues to drift away, meaning batsman can easily leave it alone and when he drifts to middle it swings down leg. He would have been handy to the left handers though. However, I think he needs to bowl from a little bit wider of the crease and angle it in and try to move it away. Otherwise, batsmen will pick him off all day. Good prospect but Umesh is much much closer to being a strike bowler, capable of leading the attack than Aaron.
