There will be few guys who will be happy to earn money in the IPL and there will surely be guys who knows the importance of playing 4 the country and playing tests for your country. Money in the sports is always encouraging sign. It always inspires more and more youngsters to take up the sports. Nothing wrong in that. Just think if 15 players gets to play 4 the country, rest 500 domestic players just have limited opportunities to earn a comfortable livelihood or come into the limelight.

To be in the playing XI would be motivation enough to give your 100%.But looking at the attitude and general committment level of our players in the current Australian series I think my assumptions are wrong. Dont know about IPL but most of them dont seem to be giving a damn about playing test for the country.

As I wrote once before, its not so much the decline in technique alone, but also the decline in hunger for succeeding in a battle-weary Test cricket. Ya'll see this continuing poor Test cricket performance as long as the Tamasha nonsensical bakwaas IPL circus continues. The problem is not just the format of T20 and the cowlashing that it encourages, but also in the whole ridiculous bidding in IPL. When Saurabh Tiwarys and Yusuf Pathans are mega millionaires for hardly doing anything other than wielding their bats like a poor man's Ghatotkach, then something is systemically wrong. I agree the 4-0 (after Adelaide) in Australia happened with team incl. the Maharathis who were there before IPL-era. Nevertheless, the problems of IPL (vis a vis quality of future Indian Test potentials) are still true.
bharat297 Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 We're not blaming the IPL directly but the BCCI's focus on the IPL has distracted them from developing the longer form of the game in anyway, which its clear the majority of fans care about. Nothing has been done to improve India's performance in the longer form of the game. They stopped the A-tours, they haven't improved domestic pitches, and they haven't tried to improve the domestic competition at all. Meanwhile, they've tried to expand the IPL, established a (meaningless) Champions League with other boards and have done nothing to try to improve our performance overseas. If you don't believe me, just compare the BCCI's reaction to India's early World Cup exit in 2007. They brought in a new coaching staff, announced more A-tours, and hired new specialist bowling and fielding coaches. Their reaction after 8 straight away losses ... announce the new IPL schedule and point to India's strong home record.

Kohli and Ashwin have done decent enough and they are IPL superstars. IPL is not the problem. Problem is our team is getting old. There will always be some players who can play everything well.

Yes, if Kohli continues to focus and work hard, he has a chance to be a Test player. That is still a long way off. But for now, neither Kohli nor Ashwin have done decent yet in Tests in a tough series. Even Pujara has to be re-evaluated after such a long break period. I will believe the future Indian batting & bowling stars when they show consistency in tough away matches. Thats still a long wait, IMO. In this Aus series, Ashwin has not impressed either.

But IPL will gradually erode Indian test match skills, going into future. Wait and see India getting hammered overseas ( and perhaps at home too) time and again in future - a trailer has already been shown in the England and Aussie series, and this will continue without doubt, as long as IPL is there. No team except Bangladesh has ever been hammered in the way India has been in the past two seasons, and it is not without good reason.

No team except Bangladesh has ever been hammered in the way India has been in the past two seasons, and it is not without good reason. + 1 to that.. the live example is Murali Vijay who looked so sublime when the aussies toured us and 3 seasons of ipl and his technique is gone.. our test superstars were pre IPL era guyz who had batted for 10-15 years without the influence of the "wham-bam-thank you mam " kinda cricket... The current consistent good players of test cricket are mostly non IPL performers...

The IPL is partially to blame, but you can't put the blame all towards the IPL. Also you can't compare England's domestic 20/20 format to IPL. They earn nowhere the money you can in IPL. You can be a millionaire after playing a few months of IPL.

Major problem will stem from the fact new generation batsmen will lack temperament, technique, shot selection to negotiate tough test cricket. We want big centuries not 50 odd from youngsters.

The sad truth is the BCCI have never ever been held accountable for their actions. It will take the combined power of the people, former players, and the media to bring them down.
