Indian cricket is set to take another hit as the recently released television ratings have shown poor figures following IndiaÃÔ abject surrender in the first three Tests against Australia in the ongoing tour. A sports viewership tracker, TAM Sports, informed that the first two matches of the four-Test series registered average ratings of 0.89 and 0.7 respectively, and the experts believe that if the trend continues, cricket wonÃÕ be able to attract the huge money it did earlier. "If eyeballs move away from cricket over a period of time, the value for the game will depreciate. Every stakeholder will lose and it will pull the game down the value chain. Right now, cricket is still the biggest sporting property in India. After the Adelaide defeat, the TV ratings will go up. Watched an ad guy saying on NDTV that they are hopeful that viewership will be back to normal once India starts playing at home. Therefore they are still upbeat on cricket as a 'Product'.

The TRPs (one TRP represents 1% of viewers in the surveyed area in a given minute) for the first two Tests were 0.89 and 0.70 compared to 1.07 and 1.30 in 2007-08, according to TAM Sports, a division of TAM Media Research, the leading television ratings agency in India. from cricinfo. ratings are low at the moment, but they werent that high in 2008 either. i dont think the indian ppl care about test cricket, to be honest. i dont recall ratings beating 2.0 when india were unbeaten for 3 years

Thanks for the info!!! Could it also be that in some parts of India, especially the small towns TV ownership has gone up quite a bit in the last few years. Making it difficult to maintain the same % levels as earlier. The first match TRPs for the two series tell us a lot. Nearly a difference of 0.2 pts. And once we lost, the public just lost interest in the series and the difference was Tripled. :(( Probably the fair-weather fans stopped watching. :D What does 'viewers' actually mean in that definition? Is a viewer anyone who has a TV or someone who is viewing his/her TV at the time of the survey?
