Rahul Dravid has said that he has not made a decision on whether to retire or not. There had been reports in the media about Dravid's imminent retirement after the defeat in Adelaide, which prompted the Indian team management to issue a statement saying that none of the senior players were about to quit. That point was reiterated by the acting captain Virender Sehwag, and now Dravid has said there was no need to make decisions immediately. "I am definitely nearer the end than the beginning, there is no doubt about that," Dravid told Channel Nine. "I haven't made any decision and there is no need to make any decisions now, we're not playing another Test match for seven to eight months so we'll see how it pans out. At my stage in my career it's always about taking it a series at a time and not looking too far ahead, so we'll see what happens." Dravid was in bad form during India's 0-4 whitewash in Australia, scoring only 194 runs at an average of 24. His failure came after good performances in his previous two series - 319 runs at an average of 64 against West Indies at home, and 461 runs at an average of 77 in England. None of the other India batsmen averaged over 40 either in Australia and their collective failure led to India's second consecutive 0-4 overseas whitewash. Dravid said it was important that India try and regain ground as a Test team. "We haven't done so well abroad over the last couple of series but I'm hopeful that some of the young kids will come through. It might take a bit of time but we'll build up a strong base. "India needs to be a strong Test-playing nation, there are not too many countries playing cricket and I think if India is competitive in Test cricket it does make a difference." India now play a tri-series in Australia, against the hosts and Sri Lanka, after which they travel to Bangladesh for the Asia Cup in March. The Indian Premier League is scheduled for April and May, after which India will play more limited-overs cricket. the two chucks on cricinfo had an interview with dravid where he reportedly told them that 'he will keep playing as long as he feels he can make a contribution to the team'. I AM DYING TO KNOW WHAT 'THAT' CONTRIBUTION IS. cos it sure as hell isn't runs, catches or leadership. he will probably keep 'contributing' to his bank account by playing until he is 73. just in time to cash in on the BCCI pension plan

Fair enough. I hope he understands the general mood and calls it a day after coming to India. As long as he does it before the first test against the Kiwis, its OK. Anyway, even if no one retires selectors should have the guts to drop the big guns.

Hope he don't retire. Youngsters can also score at home but will be under severe pressure facing international bowlers. At the same time we need to ensure we send our best team to win so we can't just axe all the seniors as some people on this forum think is best approach. We should utilise the experience of the seniors and they can pass it on to some talented juniors in these home series. I think Lax should go. Drop Gauti due to major technical issue in tests and open with Dravid. Although too early to choose as tests are far I would play something like: Dravid Viru Pujara SRT Rohit Kohli Dhoni Ashwin ZK Sree Ojha Right mix of seniors and juniors in this team. Dravid played well v England and WI so deserves his place. Tendulkar is caught up with this ton issue and we need Viru as he can score big at home and give you a massive platform. Gauti can always make a comeback if he gets into form, same for players like Mukund/Rahane knocking on the door. Lax can try and make comeback or gracefully retire. I think he looks most suspect to me, although he will do reasonably well at home, I think the juniors are closing the gap on him. Sack Fletcher too and there is a new selection panel coming I think.

Good call. One way or the other this can wait. We do not play Tests till August or September anyways. What is the hurry. VVS should do the same and not rush into anything. Fans are going to be fans. Knee jerk reaction is the last thing we want here. If VVS or RD want to retire they can do so giving it a plenty of thought. No need to announce anything now to appease some jack ass fans and media who have nothing better to do. Who cares about them anyways.

The rest of the team is also playing **** so it's unfair to put the blame on the seniors tbh. yes they've been in poor form but so has everyone else (exception Kohli). I think VVS should go. Dravid can stay for a bit, I love the man's grit, that intensity he brings to the crease regardless of form. He has already played a big part n influencing Kohli, hopefully he can pass that on to other youngsters in the team, before he leaves.

Dravid should retire and give the youngsters a chance to prepare' date='it would be selfish of VVS and dravid to wait any longer.[/quote'] dravid should have gone 2 years ago. even when you include the england tour, his one fluke series, he still averages a pathetic 30 away from home against SA, england, australia, sri lanka combined since 2006. the guy just cashes in on **** bowling atacks like west indies, new zealand, and bangladesh while failing against the good teams. easily the the most selfish cricketer in the indian lineup, IMO. there is no way i am watching another test india play until he pisses off.

He has scored centuries v Pak when opening in 2003-04. He basically opened in the england series due to crap openers and averaged 77. :winky:
Sunil Gavaskar scored lot of runs opening. Why not recall him back in the squad. Maybe even Shastri, Ganguly, Kumble too back in the side. Anyway its already a veterans XI.

You can damn well question his place in the team but to say he has been minnow basher before is absolutely retarded. Against good attacks he has been the one who has more often than not come good for India.

Dravid , Laxman, Tendulkar will be felicitated this year in March, each of them will be given gonnacharya award and each will posthumously be given a WALKING STICK and a pair of reading glasses and a years supply of BOOST AND VIAGRA LOL, THEY CAN PLAY ON UNTIL 60 AND TENDULKAR CAN FINALLY GET HIS 100 TH 100 TH :finger:
