Though someone does need to remind him that his big scores in Tests have come when he has been patient early in his innings instead of going slam bang from ball 1. The big worry is Gauti. Just when he looked ready to become a great batsman, he's fallen off the highs of 08-09 and become a very mediocre test batsman irrespective of the conditions. But problem with has been his defense which has gotten poor due to slowing reflexes against genuine pace. We saw how he struggled even in India ODIs against WI fast bowlers straight and not giving any room. There are signs of aging on his batting as well especially against genuine pace on pacy and bouncy pitches. He tried every thing in Australia, tried playing aggressive as well as seeing the ball off in some innings as well but of no help.

He is a good fielder and he is a gritty player who has played some match-winning knocks before (e.g. both the T20 World Cup final in 2007 and ODI World Cup final in 2011). He seems like a very mentally tough cricketer. If he overcomes this form slump, he would be invaluable as an experienced opening batsman at the top of the order. Remember Alistair Cook had a lot of technical problems outside off between 2006 and 2007. He got exposed a lot in the 2006/07 Ashes. But England persevered with him and he looks the goods now. Gambhir is at the right age where he needs to be the glue between the departing seniors and the upcoming youngsters. The players like Dhoni, Gambhir, Zaheer are going to be crucial over the next few years.

He hasn't had much of a struggle in ODIs, but his test form barring the SA tour has been horrible in the last 24 months, with no 100s for almost 2 years now, an avg of around 30. Ganguly was dropped after an average 12 months of batting in 2004-05, Sehwag lost his spot after 2 series failures in 2006. Gambhir has been lucky not to have lost his spot so far.

Disagree. I didn't think he looked too bad against the short ball. His biggest problem seemed to be inside edging the ball that swung back into him, making him a big candidate for dragging the ball back onto his stumps.
Old guy Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 dont count of mukund yet his problem is minor.. and technical which can be easily rectified he already has the attitude of test criketer and he stays at wickets for long hours he will be our next opener maybe will replace sehwag rahane i think would be better suited in middle order

Yep fair enough but you have to think long term when you decide who to drop and who to keep. Gambhir is struggling right now, but he has an aggression and a certain mental toughness about him which could see him come through this. To be honest, one of the biggest concerns with dropping someone like Gambhir is that our first-class system is a joke and if he was dropped now he could probably never come back. Gambhir is one of the few players in the Indian team to have toured every country now, but is still young enough to have another 5-6 years. However, form permitting though. I'm not saying, keep him despite his poor form. I'm saying that when the middle-order goes and you lose Dravid, Laxman, Tendulkar together, you need someone with experience still there. India need a specialist batting coach, working full-time with the young batsmen to fix up their technical issues. I'd like to see Dravid or SRT stay on as a batting coach with these guys.
