Ricky Ponting, on Thursday, gave a fascinating insight into him agreeing to lead Australia again. The 37-year-old batting ace said, “I had a good chat with John Inverarity (chief selector) about what my concerns were. Then I decided to do what they wanted me to do and what probably was right for the team.” Ponting revealed that he had actually had a talk with David Warner, the vice-captain of the ODI side, after the Adelaide game against India. By then it had become clear that skipper Michael Clarke's hamstring injury might not heal in time for Friday's game against Sri Lanka here. Warner was told by Ponting that “make sure you've got yourself ready to captain Australia in a couple of day's time.” Then, the selectors spoke to Ponting. “The selectors made it very clear to me as to why they have not given the captaincy to Warner for this game.” Ponting admitted he had concerns initially about taking up the responsibility. “The fact that there was a vice-captain named and it looked like I was coming over the top of him. And maybe I was not giving a younger guy an opportunity to lead Australia.” However, Warner's phone call to Ponting at this point was reassuring. Warner said to Ponting, “Don't worry about me. You better make sure you've got yourself ready to captain Australia.” On being named the captain again, Ponting said, “I'm excited about leading the team but hopefully only for a short time.” Ponting also dwelt on the tough scheduling of the tournament, long hours of travelling, and the mental and physical impact it had on the players, the pace bowlers in particular. The champion batsman said his understanding was that the selectors had a clear word with experienced 'keeper-batsman Brad Haddin, now excluded from the ODI side. “I think he has been spoken to face-to-face by the selectors. He has been told, his position has been the same all the way through.” Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene said his team “was not ruthless in finishing games off.” He added, “We look at it (the two narrow defeats and a tie) in a positive way but realise we made mistakes. We need to get that winning habit going.” Jayawardene explained, “It is not only about the last 10 overs. We lost wickets upfront and lost wickets in the batting Power Play. We dropped catches and missed run-out chances.” The Sri Lankan captain said, “We have spoken about the situation as a group. I do not know how many wins will get us into the finals. What's in our control is to try and win matches.”

The Australian captain missed today's match against Sri Lanka in Sydney but was hopeful he would be back for the Gabba game. However it appears that Ricky Ponting will remain captain for a second successive match. "I've done a lot of work over the last couple of days and physio Alex Kountouris would prefer me to rest but I'm not far away at all," Clarke said today. "It's going to be hard to watch, that's for sure, but the boys are flying so no doubt Punter can come out and do a great job, as he has for a long time."

What the TEST series and the ODI series have proven to me is how big an influence a captain can be in a teams success, SL without Jaywardene, OZ without Clarke are a different team, India without Dhoni in test's would be a big plus in the last 2 series.

7th Match: Australia v India :Post Match Discussion India simply outplayed in every department today be it batting ,fielding and bowling Australia :hatsoff: I hope they give Manish tiwary a chance in the next match in place of Rohit sharma .
