If Sach wasn't selected, then Rahane would have been selected and would have been warming the bench according to your argument. This was the team for T20s: Gambhir Sehwag Kohli Raina Sharma Dhoni Jadeja Ashwin Sharma Vinay Kumar Praveen Kumar Where would you have slotted Rahane? How many games has Rahul Sharma played so far? Why does Jadeja keep getting game after game? Why is Praveen Kumar still in the team even though he hasn't done jackshit in ODIS in the last 2 years. Ashwin has been dissappointing as well + add in the fact that he sucks at running between the wickets and he's a useless fielder, it completely undermines his bowling provided he has good days. Sehwag hasn't done jackshit in ODIs either apart from that 219. Rohit Sharma hasn't done anything. Raina is hit and miss these days. Captain cool cost us a victory against Lanka. Pappu is useless. There are lots of reason why we're in this mess and the opening combination is one of them but it's not as easy as you have argued. I think Sid made a very pertinent point, i.e. if SRT hadn't been around we wouldn't have been forced to have a rotation policy in place and could have played a settled team. Now we have a new opening pair every game which is hardly the formula for success. Given SRT plays 1 out of 4 series, it totally disrupts the team combination. I mean you play certain players and team for 15 games and then suddenly here comes a player who wasn't part of that team and suddenly everything has to be re-planned with new team combination and a rejigged batting order for others.

An inconsistent Sehwag and now a suddenly consistent gambhir would have meant that someone like Rahane/Pappu would have gotten at least 4 games in place of either of these two. Wouldn't that have been tinkering with the lineup? There are so many things wrong with this team and folks like you are taking the easy way out by only blaming SRTs selection. With SRT/without SRT, we would have had the same problems.

Plus...who knows...Rahane might have scored runs forcing Sehwag to sit.

Do you even understand what we are talking about.Getting 4-5 games at a stretch and being rotated after every game are very different.Case in point, Sehwag looked good at Adelaide against Aussies and had a 50 run partnership that set up our chase and next game there was his turn to rotate.Sach came in that game after a break,looked pretty medicore against Kulasekra .He finaly looked in touch against Lankans last match only because he played 3 games consecutively. Playing consistently helps even if your are the greatest and the best.Playing one ,rotating the next,neither helps the team nor that player. And I am sure Sehwag-Gautam would have opened most of the games,because our kaptaan only wanted to give consistent run to Rohit and Raina,even Tiwari is being ignored in front of super tailunts of Rohit.And as far Jadeja is concerned,I just hope Dhoni doesnt stick with him for far too long like he did the last time around

Now with SRT back from his hiatus of 3 odi series, Dhoni can't drop him and has to play him, thus the rotation policy. Without SRT at least he woul dhave gone with his best combination (with or without Rahane) and if that didn't work could have made a change. But now the whole focus is how to get SRT in the team which probably is one of the reasons there's a rift in the team.

With or Without SRT, there are far too many problems in the team. And Sehwag is as inconsistent as ever. There are just too many passengers in the team and SRT is one of them. He's only part of the problem, not THE problem as most of you are making out to be. The fact of the matter is neither Sehwag or Sachin should have been picked in the first place for this tour. Nor should have Pappu been picked. The world cup victory did more damage than good in the long term. Until we get rid of this attitude "Oh we are the world cup champions till 2015," and how they would trade in x number amount of losses just for that victory," no team which we put out there will make much of a difference.
