India vs SL : 11th match : pre and post match review

India had no business losing any match to this SL team despite poor form. This is such an average bowling side apart from Malinga .
We lost the only game to SL when Dhoni was forced to sit out, and Sehwag decided to "rest" Rohit instead of Jaddu thereby weakening our bowling. If we had the same team with Dhoni we wouldn't have lost.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion about how great Raina is or 'not'.... The fact is that he has a pathetic technique and is a pure basher/slogger. He can't play the bouncer if his life was on the line.... I totally agree that the only reason he is a fixture in India's LOI eleven is his closeness with Dhoni The SL bowlers were thrown off their game plan by Kohli's blitz and hence forgot to bowl short at Raina... so he got lucky and used his strength to smash length balls. He is not a very reliable batter but as long as he helps India win matches I don't care about his batting position or technique..... Raina at best is a supporting role player with bat and ball aka bits and pieces cricketer

Didn't we beat them 3-0 or 4-0 in Lanka once as well..do not recollect. The fact is that they are big time FTBs
We did that the last 2 series in SL and also beat them in the Asia Cup final. Plus we all know SL's record against India in non-subcontinental conditions as listed in OP :giggle: And we have Nanga Sanga & Lady Jaya questioning our away record :hysterical: On top of that we have SL fans like l@nd pakeer and DeadMan wh actually believe that shyt!!! :cantstop:

We can use Irfan at no. 7 , Ashwin at no. 8 that will give us balance down the order. at no. 9 - specialist spinner like Ojha , Rahul and then 2 pacers. It will work even in Subcontinent. One good thing about Irfan is that he can bowl in death overs unlike other trundlers.

The question is about who will bowl the 10 overs? Cannot rely on Raina,Rohit and Sehwag for this... I would drop Yadav and bring in Pathan.Bolsters the batting as well as maintains bowling options.Yadav has been very expensive but his time will come.

Every player has a specific role/function within the team. Sometimes a bette batsman may not add as much value as a lesser one for variety of reasons. E.g., we know likes of Pujara and Rahane are way better than Raina but we can't fit all of them in shorter formats, especially lower down the order. A team needs batsmen wh can go for broke at the death or while chasing a igh run rate right from get go and players like Raina, Yusuf, Uthappa fit the bill perfectly. Case in point look at WC Q/F and S/F. I doubt India would have won the matches against Aus and Pak in the W/C if Raina hadn't scored the runs he did lower down the order. Players like Raina are not expected to perform when the score is 40/4 or 60/5 and are in the side when a reasonable platform exists and they can go for quick runs.

If Raina is bowling the 50th over even now, can it get any worse? I say let Raina, Sehwag and Rohit share the 10 overs with other bowlers being Ashwin, Irfan and 2 other pacers. My team would be... Sehwag SRT Gambhir Kohli Rohit Dhoni Raina Irfan Ashwin/Rahul Sharma Zak/Vinay/PK (depending on who's fit) Umesh We already give away lots of run so this team can't do any worse but it bats deep with Irfan cming in at 8. At least we will be in every game and may actually win with such a side.

Raina needs to go back to domestic cricket, needs to sort his short-ball problem + needs to plan his innings properly more. These occasional brilliant innings wont help his case long. QF vs Aus SF vs Pak Asia cup vs Pak and today, so many memorable innings he's played. He has talent, needs to refine himself. He's definitely a big match player.

He should play Asia Cup on flat pattas in B'desh and then return to domestic cricket. Let's not compound a poor decision by making another poor one which in this case would be knee jerk.

In the light of the oft-repeated threats of thrashing Aus when they visit us , reading those stats makes you realise that few fans are aware of the reality ......that Australia Dominates India in India in ODI's . Since 2000 australia have won 4 ODI series IN India while india has manged just 1 series victory at home
Didn't know Pakis felt ashamed of their nationality.

This guy maint, an econ rate of 5 when our asking rate to finish in 40 overs was over 8... not a single boundary or sixer was scored against him while we pulverised everyone else.. they were jumping out to try and hit him atleast a few times..but the lack of pace probably did them in.. Ends up with HMRKB Herath 4 0 20 0 5.00 when we scored 320 odd in 36 overs Surely he warranted another go when Malinga was conceding 14s and 15s an over.. This isn't a hindsight thing, i was nervously expecting him after every good over we had in the powerplays.. how much worse could he have gotten hit..worse than 20+ an over ?..they had a few of such overs. Shocking captaincy.

20.1 Herath to Kohli, 2 runs, 93.3 kph, tossed up outside off stump, Kohli drives through cover-point for two. Unlike Sehwag and Sachin, these two are getting the runs without taking any risks. 20.2 Herath to Kohli, 1 wide, 90.9 kph, slips a full ball down the leg side and it is called. 20.2 Herath to Kohli, no run, 91.2 kph, tossed up, Kohli plays it back to the bowler. 20.3 Herath to Kohli, 1 run, 89.8 kph, tossed up, Kohli carves inside out through the covers for a single. 20.4 Herath to Gambhir, 1 run, 91.2 kph, short of a length outside off, Gambhir cuts it through point for one. 20.5 Herath to Kohli, 1 run, 89.8 kph, full ball on the stumps, Kohli drives through mid-on for one. 20.6 Herath to Gambhir, 1 run, 90.1 kph, Gambhir leans out and drives through point for one. 22.1 Herath to Gambhir, no run, 88.7 kph, tossed up outside off, Gambhir defends to the covers. 22.2 Herath to Gambhir, 1 run, 93.8 kph, Gambhir chips lout and gets close to the flight, he drives past midwicket and gets to his 3rd 50 in the CB series. The first 2 came in a different era. 22.3 Herath to Kohli, 1 run, 90.5 kph, very full, Kohli drives down to long-on for one. 22.4 Herath to Gambhir, no run, 91.5 kph, Gambhir jumps out, Herath sees him and holds it back. Gambhir defends to the leg side. 22.5 Herath to Gambhir, 1 run, 86.2 kph, Gambhir skips down again, opens up the off side as he does and looks to loft over the covers. Tight second possible there, but Kohli sends Gambhir back. 22.6 Herath to Kohli, 1 run, 95.0 kph, top over from Herath, only four runs in these circumstances. Pitched up outside off, driven through extra cover for one. 24.1 Herath to Gambhir, 2 runs, 90.2 kph, back of a length on Gambhir's pads, and he's worked it square for two more. These two can run well when they get the calling right. 24.2 Herath to Gambhir, 1 run, 96.0 kph, Gambhir advances, and gets too close to the flight. He still manages to push a single down to long-off. 24.3 Herath to Kohli, 1 run, 91.7 kph, tossed up outside off, Kohli drives another single through long-off. 24.4 Herath to Gambhir, 1 run, 86.5 kph, Gambhir skips out again to a wide ball outside off stump and chips it on the bounce to long-off. 24.5 Herath to Kohli, no run, 96.8 kph, Mahela in the covers yet again. Kohli drives inside out into the covers, and the captain stops it. 24.6 Herath to Kohli, 1 run, 96.1 kph, low full toss on off stump, driven to long off for one more. 26.1 Herath to Gambhir, no run, 86.8 kph, tossed up on the pads, Gambhir nudges behind square but can't get the single. 26.2 Herath to Gambhir, 1 run, 90.5 kph, Gambhir runs out of the crease and on-drives firmly to deep long-on for one. 26.3 Herath to Kohli, 1 run, 88.2 kph, nearly holes out. Kohli skims a full ball almost straight to deep midwicket. It was too full for him to get under, hence he didn't get enough elevation. 26.4 Herath to Gambhir, no run, 97.2 kph, Gambhir jumps out and plays a full ball back to the bowler. 26.5 Herath to Gambhir, no run, 90.3 kph, hmm, close to off stump. Nerver. Gambhir tries ti sweep from the line of off stump and misses. The ball doesn't spin and flies just past off stump. 26.6 Herath to Gambhir, 1 run, 98.6 kph, Gambhir chips out again and works a single through deep midwicket. Top over from Herath.

Not a worse move by any stretch of imagination. It is the seamers that troubled Australia on this very same ground. There is a big chance India could have taken Herath to cleaners.

That is exactly the reason Indian cricket will not be able to dominate world cricket on a consistent basis.... we dwell too much on ocassional brilliance and one off good performances to stick with cricketers... Hence no change is affected even with dismal performance upon dismal performance. If Raina had not been given a long leash, then yes I would support his place in the side for a while due to his age... but this chump has played in the team for how many years now? I'm sure there are other cricketers in India who can do his job at numbers 6 or 7 albeit a bit more consistently. We all know he is a different beast on flat SC tracks... but if we are to plan for success then he has been given enough time and now is a chance to try out other bashers at that spot.
