http://www.stuff.co.nz/4140581a28.html Woman scammed by internet suitor Reuters | Wednesday, 25 July 2007 A 30-year-old Adelaide woman has been duped into sending more than $A30,000 ($NZ33,250) to a Nigerian suitor she met over the internet. Police said the woman had registered with a dating agency that provided a chat room facility over the net. As a result she made contact and befriended the Nigerian who encouraged her to send him money so that he could visit her in Australia. "The woman was keen to forge a relationship with the man and, as a result, has been dispatching money via a mailing company to him," a police spokesman said. "Unfortunately the woman reported she has lost in excess of $A30,000 and it has left her in shock and very upset at being victimised in this way." Police said the Nigerian man had been very organised in his approach, supplying photos of himself and other contact details of his staff and associates in a bid to prove his integrity. They said the woman also had reported that a friend had fallen victim to an identical scam. "This is a reminder to anyone using a computer and visiting any website," a police spokesman said. "Please be very careful and never send money to any person or organisation unless you are 100 per cent certain it is authentic." :whatchutalkingabout

I can completely identify with the woman here. Internet is shall we say a very "interesting" tool. In many ways an internet chat/conversation is lot deeper than a normal conversation. You end up talking to person which you would have otherwise not even looked at in real life. Lets face it - in real life most of us, if not all, are superficial. We tend to hope the empty seat next to us is in a train/plane is occupied by a beautiful babe/handsome man and not a 300 pounder. We hope to meet a classy lady opening the door when we visit a friend and not a lady that has undergone breast removal due to cancer. Sad I know but isnt that true as well? In that sense Internet chatting is lot deeper. You can talk to people without judging them. You can talk to a person without wondering about his nationality, race etc. What are the odds, otherwise, that an Australian dame would talk to a Nigerian person in real life?? Pretty much none. And if the conversation turns out to be great you can start getting close even without realizing it. Of course the flip side of that is that you are talking essentially to a screen and not a person as such. It is always unfortunate to see anyone get scammed, hopefully the lady will get her money back...which sounds pretty remote I think. xxx

:hysterical::hysterical:I don't even feel bad for her.How dumb can you get? And trusting someone from Nigeria????....most internet money scams start there.......nahi???
Worse part is this is not one of those send us money then get rich type of scams. This was to do with the lady falling for a Nigerian man thanks to an online dating service. She's sent him $30,000 to get him over to Australia. Even if he did turn up in Australia what could she have expected from him anyways? :P
