In the 70s and 80s we were an ordinary team. Players in an ordinary team don't clash much. in the 90s and 2000s we got some players of outstanding dignity and integrity in the team. Sachin, Dravid, Dada, Kumble, Laxman, Srinath etc were men of principle and were too matured to allow any nonsense sentiments to grow. They were too professional to allow a handful of losses break them apart. It's not that they did not have differences of opinion, they just never washed their dirty linen in public. They always managed to resolve things in among themselves like matured adults should do. They saw the team through from ordinary to world no1 and ODI world champions. Now that their time is over, the new generation of Indian cricketers will have to stand the test of character and come out winners. Temperament is not just for the matches. One has to show the same temperament in dealing with the media, dealing with differences of opinions and dealing with one's own failures as well as team's collective failure. And not just the failures, but the way people like chappell and others keep rubbing it in. These series of defeats will separate the men from the boys. It's not about who is captain, who is vice captain and who is a gandpa. It's about who has in him what it takes to be part of an international cricket team and to succeed at length in international cricket. I hope our new generation of cricketers pass that test and will carry forward the legacy our wonderful cricketers are leaving behind.
Well said. :two_thumbs_up:

WHAT?????? The ordinary team that you are talking about won series in West Indies and England overseas, didnt see that happen in 2000s or 1990s. The 80s team had some super stars who were as good as the current lot, if not better. Where 70s and 80s team suffered a bit was that the opposition was truly great back then. The only team of today who would be better than those of 70s and 80s would possibly be England, but only just about. Lets not deride our own cricketing history just to highlight a bunch of prima donnas today. That being said dont want to indulge in a debate on this day when Dravid call it quits. xxx

He has been opening something more fun than test opening. In reality the rift is mainly Mahi and his factions fault. Glad to see Viru and Gauti fight back. Sala MS. Wait till Bhajji and Sree return, see the fire :hysterical:
u mean bhajji will slap shreesanth again :giggle:

My apologies. I wont argue against that. We definitely won those series and yes, it was good team. But we were not exactly world no1 test team. We were not exactly expected to win all the matches we played.

Difference was media. There was no media back then. Rifts were there back then too. There were some people full of egos even in 70s and 80s, Bishon Bedi, Sunil Gavaskar, and Kapil Dev and the incidents they have been involved with. Questions regarding Kapil and Gavaskar were asked in a news channel from likes of Yashpal Sharma and Chetan Sharma and actually they could not deny that they did not have issues. Kapil was even dropped for one test at that time.

Because we were winning earlier and now we're not.
It means this process is a joke. As long as our *****es are not on fire, let the show move. Pathetic third-grade attitude.

I guess Kapil was dropped for playing a flamboyant shot at the time the team needed someone to stick it out, la Damien Martyn versus South Africa.

Yeah we were not a good team in the 70s and 80s when we won test series in England, West Indies, drew in Australia on more than one occasion, won a World Cup away from home, won a championship the equivalent of a World Cup also away from home - all against better opposition than the average quality of cricket today and are some great team now when we are getting our butts kicked 0-8.

I understand it's bad but it's important to state the facts as they are.

Yeah we did have low times in the 70s and 80s - how is that equivalent to saying we were not a good team then? And even those low times were not lower than 0-8. Even against an all time great West Indies team, which would beat the current England and Australia teams 9 out of 10 times, India were never whitewashed.

There was a beautiful article written by Vic Marks about how English team was stunned that Kapil had been dropped for the next game (not to mention the entire India). And when Kapil came back in the subsequent game the very first delivery he faced he launched into another one of his trademark ground clearing shots, almost as if suggesting "I'm back bi**es" ( I paraphrase of course). It was a measure of Kapil that his opposition liked his approach to game as much as his own fans. Will see if I can dig that up.

In late 70s we won 2 tests in Australia, albeit against a depleted Australian team thanks to Packer circus. The series went down 3-2 in favor of Australia. On the next trip we lost 2-1. The one after was drawn but we should have won it 2-0. We should have won all the 3 series, definitely the last one. The issue, in my opinion, was not a weak team at all. We just did not push our advantages. The team had good players but we didnt seal the deal. Yes. I happen to think if we had won 1986 trip down under 2-0 Indian cricket would have changed forever.

^^ Pakistan se haar haar ke naak kata rakhi thi 70-80s me. :--D
I am assuming you are suggesting test cricket here, as LOI was hardly played in 70s. In Test the only series we lost at home was in late 80s, around 88 I beleive, the last series of Gavaskar. Otherwise India won in India and Pakistan in Pakistan. Kapil Dev would make sure we won here, Imran Khan would ensure they won there. Thats it really. The results would show that. In LOI we had wood over Pakistan till 1986. Kapil Dev had famously told Miandad, "Why do you guys bother to turn up, you always lose to us anways". That was the last time we won in Sharjah for a long time. The devil lies in the details though, if you look at the fixtures and results you would see India's performance against Pakistan in early LOI was more of a dominance.

The 70s team had a W/L record of 0.89 and was not a bad team. The 80s team was very average in terms of stats, having a W/L ratio of 0.52. ( the 80s outfit won only 3 overseas matches out of 39). The 70s team had good batsmen and a world class spin machine that enabled them to be one of our historically better teams. The 80s team was ok batting wise, but barring Kapil Dev we did not have world class bowlers and were thrashed whenever we travelled. Since the 80s and before the 70s, barring some exceptional years, we have usually been lions at home and lambs for slaughter abroad. Here is a historic view of India over the years. http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/stats/index.html?class=1;team=6;template=results;type=team;view=year W/L ratio has exceeded 1.0 only in 2005, 1979, 1994, 1988, 2010, 2004, 2007, 2008 and 2002, http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/stats/index.html?class=1;home_or_away=2;orderby=win_loss_ratio;team=6;template=results;type=team;view=year When we do that for overseas performance, only 2004 and 2010 have W/L exceeding 1.0. We have historically been one of the weakest teams, barring the odd years. The reasons are not difficult to spot, our bowling has usually sucked very much. Barring 1976, the 70s team had overseas W/L ratio of less than 0.5 in every year.
