What would have happened had they fallen short of the rate today?[/quote'] either 100% match fees or immediate ban, 2nd offence in 12 months (level 1): From Para 7.3, ICC Code of Conduct: 1 suspension point = 1 match ban in t20 so Mahela could have missed both Semi and Finals. well sri lanka's 2nd innings ran 30 minutes over scheduled finish time. so should be interesting.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni will never again get banned for a slow over-rate if he follows the model that has been devised by Sri Lanka’s smart cricketers. And Sourav Ganguly must be left wondering why he never thought of this. Here’s what happened in the match between Sri Lanka and England: Kumara Sangakkarra surprisingly turned up for the toss as Sri Lanka’s stand-in skipper. The regular skipper Mahela Jayawardene was in the squad but he did not want to be captain. ICC should mend the rules such that the penalty is carried forward to the next captain and not a particular player. Of course, teams like SL can still make an useless player captain in such cases, but at least they can't escape ban
