http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2114123/One-soft-drink-day-raises-heart-attack-danger-20-cent-according-U-S-study.html One soft drink a day raises 'heart attack danger' by 20% according to U.S study By Fiona Macrae Drinkng one sugar-laden soft drink every day could dramatically increase the odds of having a heart attack. A study of more than 40,000 men suggested that a daily sugar-sweetened drink raised the chances of having a heart attack including a deadly one by 20 per cent. The U.S. research team made their link after analysing information provided by men who were asked every two years between 1986 and 2008 to provide detailed information about their diet. Tallying the information showed that compared to never drinking sugary soft drinks, having 350ml a day (a standard can contains 330ml) raised the risk of a heart attack by 20 per cent.

OP does not mention other components of the diet (I hope it is there in the research it is referring to). Sugary drinks can magnify the bad-effects of fatty foods - especially when taken together. But, I don't see how one cold drink worth of sugar per day can affect 20% by itself. Also, staying active (at least 30 mins x 4-5 times a week) helps a lot, and allows you more freedom with food/diets.

How do they conduct such studies? You would need two identically healthy ( or sick) people one of whom drinks soft drinks regularly and the other doesn't, provided all other conditions relating to health - diet, pollution levels, standard of living, history of hereditary diseases etc remain the same.

I think they have done that. also diso****ed other stuff like effects of alcohol' date=' somking, etc. And 40000 is a good enough sample[/quote'] typical Coke/Pepsi have about 10-11 gm of sugar per 100 ml. So about 35 gms of sugar per 350ml can. A typical Indian sweet (pair of rasgulla, gulabjamun etc) would have more sugar than that - and besides they contain fat also. Also, it depends on the timing and combination of when you are taking the sugar, sugary product. A scoop of ice-cream, a bottle of cold drink is not as bad just_before/during/after strenuous exercise session - as it is when you are sitting on couch, and even worse - when you take it with friend chips, pizza etc. So, to say just by having a bottle of soft drink per day, one increases the risk of heart attack by 20% is a bit simplistic. IMO, it assumes few other 'typical' dietary habits/life-styles associated with regular soft-drink users. Also, it is a safe assumption that those health conscious actually watch their sugar/soft-drink intake, even though they can afford to have more than that, and I would like to see the research team's 'numbers' for 'active' people.
