KOLKATA/NEW DELHI: A Jadavpur university professor was arrested today for allegedly posting a cartoon on the internet showing West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee in poor light after she forced out Dinesh Trivedi and put Mukul Roy in his place as railway minister. The arrest of Ambikesh Mohapatra, a chemistry professor, sparked an outrage with opposition CPM and the academic community saying the police action is "highly atrocious" and a "clear assault" on the minimum democratic right of freedom of expression. The professor was later granted bail by an Alipore court. Protests were also held by students and the professor's colleagues at the Jadavpur university campus here. DCP (south suburban division) Sujay Chanda said the professor was arrested along with a neighbour residing in east Jadavpur for spreading derogatory messages against "respectable persons" on a popular social networking site. Mohapatra was charged with IPC offences relating to defamation and insulting the modesty of women as well as cyber crime offences, police said. Labour minister Purnendu Bose justified the arrest. He argued that the objectionable content was not a cartoon, but real pictures, which were nothing but an insult. "Law will take its own course," he said. The cartoon in question, which was also sent by e-mail, showed chief minister and the railway minister apparently exchanging dialogues from a popular Bengali film Sonar Kella, a detective masterpiece by Satyajit Ray, which alluded to the replacement of Trivedi by Roy as railway minister. "The arrest is a clear assault on the democratic right of freedom of expression. It is like very much what happened during Emergency," CPM leader Brinda Karat said. Karat's party colleague Md Salim said the police action is highly ridiculous and highly atrocious. However, Mamata has defended the police action saying that the professor was arrested for his "wrong deeds" and blamed the CPM for raising trivial issues to malign her. Congress today sought to disapprove of the arrest of a Professor by West Bengal Police for allegedly posting a cartoon showing chief minister Mamata Banerjee in poor light on a popular social networking site. Party spokesman Manish Tewari said the Congress always believed in the freedom of right of expression granted by the Constitution which was intrinsic to the democratic ethos of the country. He, however, added that he had no first hand knowledge of the incident and therefore it was inappropriate for making any sweeping judgement without understanding facts from the West Bengal unit of the party. Congress is a junior partner in the West Bengal government headed by the Trinamool Congress supremo while Banerjee's party is the second largest constituent of the UPA at the Centre after Congress. In recent times, Trinamool has emerged as the most troublesome ally for the Congress at the Centre. The cartoon by the professor of chemistry of Jadavpur University also involved Railway Minister Mukul Roy and former railway minister Dinesh Trivedi. Arrested for drawing a cartoon and that too of a politician. And there is nothing too bad that I can see and it simply seems to make a funny statement about the railway minister situation. :WTF:

"They don't do any work but think of ways to frame me," Banerjee said targeting the CPI-M hours after the police action against Ambikesh Mohapatra that led to a strong condemnation from the academic community and the Left. " ... They commit crimes and once people are arrested they run it on their channels for the whole day," she said at a public event. The Trinamool Congress supremo warned this will not be allowed to go on. Labour minister Purnendu Bose also justified the arrest, arguing the contents circulated by the professor were not a cartoon, but real pictures, which were nothing but an insult. "Law will take its own course," he said. Mohapatra meanwhile claimed some people suspected to be belonging to ruling Trinamool Congress yesterday forced him to sign a letter to say he is a member of CPM and that he had intentionally sent the e-mails circulating the cartoons. Political parties react CPM, BJP and Congress today joined in a chorus to flay the Mamata Banerjee government for setting a "dangerous trend of silencing cartoonists" by arresting them for criticising political leaders. Expressing surprise at the arrest of a professor of Jadavpur University for allegedly posting cartoons on a social networking site, leader of opposition Suryakanta Mishra said, "It shows lack of patience of the state government which has poor knowledge that everyone has the right of expression." The CPM leader described the police action as "unprecedented". BJP state president Rahul Sinha said there had been "dangerous cartoons" in the past against Indira Gandhi, Atal Behari Vajpayee, LK Advani, Jyoti Basu and others "but no political party took any action against any cartoonist." "Are we really heading for a party-sponsored emergency?" Sinha said. A leader of TMC ally, Congress' Om Prakash Mishra dubbed the arrest as "unfortunate".

The professor was beaten by the TMC supporters & then he was forced to write a letter that he has done that to insult Mamta personally to harass her.Then he was handed over to the police.He was released though after 16 hours as the student community protested against this.Specially the media played a imp part in supporting the professor.This government of Mamata is embarassing themselves.

Trinamool's latest party rule: Don't marry CPM members, don't even talk to them KOLKATA: The Trinamool Congress has asked its members not to marry any CPM leader or anyone even distantly related to them. Conveying the ruling party's message at a programme in Habra in North 24-Parganas, food supplies minister Jyotipriya Mullick said: "Don't mingle with the CPM. Don't even talk to them if you meet them at a local chai (tea) shop. We have vowed to boycott the CPM socially. Our workers must make sure that nobody in their family enters into any marital relationship with any CPM leader or supporter." The minister advised the audience, many of whom happened to be the CPM supporters, to avoid any relative who had anything to do with the communist party. Even as chief minister Mamata Banerjee is aware that several local CPM workers have been joining her party even since the Left's debacle in the 2011 Assembly elections, her party has been talking about the fatwa for quite sometime now. But Mullick, who is also the Trinamool Congress' district observer in North 24-Parganas, made the diktat public by making it the major party of his speech on Sunday evening. Among those present at the function was Trinamool M P Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar. The minister told the gathering that Trinamool Congress workers must work in the most dedicated manner ahead of the panchyat elections since the party would probably go it alone. The panchayat elections are due next year and the Trinamool's ally in the government, the Congress, has already declared its intentions to fight the rural polls alone. The Congress leadership in the centre has, however, remained noncommittal on the issue. Even as the Trinamool leaders present at Habra's programme talked about a possible separation from the Congress during the panchayat polls, they mostly concentrated on revving up solidarity against the CPM, which, according to Mullick was the "main enemy".
