IMO hitting a defenceless child who cannot hit you back is the worst thing ever. There are other ways of disciplining a child fromt aking his TV, playtime privelages, grounding him, etc which will equally work. Younger children can be made to sit in a corner or sent to their room. We seem to go by the theory that a parent knows best. Sometimes they dont. Often they are short on patience and frusturated because of theri work life and take it off on their kids. Just because a parent is physically stornger than a child, he gets away with the physical abuse. That doesnt make it right What does a child learn when he is hit? Only the value of fear. Its easiest thing for a parent to hit a child and get off the responsibilty of parenting. He could have tried to make the child understand abd be motivating but that would have taken longer. There are other grown up stuff for the parents to do so hit and control the child Whatever way we look at it, physical abuse is physical abuse. BTW my parents hit me occasionaly too and while I believe they are the best parents a child could ever have, I still believe the beatings part were wrong and I learnt nothing except fear from the hitting and it was an easy way out for them some kids can be devil incarnate and difficult to raise but respect and obidience can be installed in a child without physical abuse too. When you need to hit a weak, defenceless being who cannot hit you back, on some level you have failed as a parent. Its no different from a physically stronger human bullying a weaker one to bend him to his wishes. Whether its a husband hitting a wife, a bully at school, its all the same

If over-used, that can be termed as psychological abuse. And IMO it is not any better than physical abuse - if not worse.

There is absolutely nothing wrong in raising hands on a child as long as it's limited to a few slaps. The west started this trend of not raising hands on the kids and other forms of punishment like "go to your room and stay there" and look how their teenagers are ending up.

IMO its about spending time and working with the kids. Neither sending to the room nor slapping them would work. we try naughty seat which is similar to sending them to another room. Teaching them responsibility can not be done with either. These options are used to show that there are consequences and once kids learn to accept consequences then its a massive fail. Remember the undisciplined - naughty kid in the neighborhood or class who used to get beaten up, did that beating fix anything ? Like I said in another thread, adults hit kids when ADULTS lose patience. Kids dont know the difference between right or wrong most of the time so adults need to work with them. Like Beetle said, most parents actually feel worse after hitting the child and then spoil them so there is no effect. I am not saying the parents should be send to prison for hitting kids unless its serious, all Im saying is, I have never ever come across a situation or an example where slapping the kid was only option and where it worked.

LMAO. You just have to go to any local school or village in India. Many of the kids bunk school, are into charas ganja, tease and assault women, etc. I have seen kids carrying knives and guns and getting into fights. So dunno how our troubled teenagers are worse than the kids in the west, only thing its highlighted more there. Of course in the higher end schools/colleges in India you wont notice the problem to such an extent but thats the same in the west too

I have seen few cases where timely slaps did fix the things. Which is why I am saying - it is OK and it depends. Why are parents supposed to behave like Gandhi - at all the times -. I think they should be allowed to lose patience in extreme cases ( in controlled manner) or pretend to. In fact, any form of punishment is an expression of losing patience.
