vamos_rafa Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 Kumble in the early 2000s went through a similar struggle in his career (not as bad as Bhajji though), but went away, worked on his bowling and came back with new variations, started turning the ball, cut his reliance on top spinners and started to bowl more googlies. Bhajji too after nearly 80-85 tests stagnated as a bowler. Should ideally have been dropped from the side in 2009 when it was clear he was not the same bowler. Needs to cut down on shorter formats and focus on FC cricket only for the rest of his career or till the time he gets his form back. Still has the flight, loop, drift and bounce but uses those skills occassionaly. And at 32, is still younger than Ajmal and Swann! Would be premature to write him off totally. Kumble's resurgenece also conincided with the advent of Harbhajan singh. Ganguly started picking bhajji as the premier spinner in some of the matches and that too at the expense of Kumble. But what Kumble did after that just speaks volumes about the man. He re inveneted himself as a bowler, where in he started flighting the ball and indeed started picking up wickets in places like Eng and Oz. His cleaning up of the tail act really helped us in winning the 2007 England tour. But the question is does Bhajji have the hunger of a Kumble to go back and put the hard yards? He also needs to make radical changes in his bowling.

vamos_rafa Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 Harbhajan Singh 15 Wickets vs Australia 2nd Test Kolkata 2001 - YouTube Seeing it again.. Aussies really played him like noobs That should not take away any credit from what he did in that series. He was bowling a relentless line and length and hence got the wickets.
jj_28 Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 I mean due to his obession with doosra , he lost his traditional off-break , flight and drift. And considering how the carrier of Saqlain ended with him being ineffective in his last test matches,do you think doosra destroys an off-spinner ? And the best off-spinner Swann doesn't posses a doosra . he became over reliant on it and when batsmen found out how to pick up the doosra then he became ineffective
Crookbond Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 A nice article by Harsha Bhogle on Harbhajan Singh From here on, Harbhajan will have to look beyond numbers, stop scouring the horizon for competition, for there is no one of his ability there. He needs to fly beyond and search within, let his ambition drag him to untenanted peaks. It can only come from being the bowler he wants to be. When the great Shane Warne wasn't bowling the way he wanted to, he hopped a flight to Adelaide to meet his old mentor, and just bowled and bowled and bowled till the ball obeyed him. As spinners go, Harbhajan is still young enough to look ahead rather than behind. Greatness is not out of bounds; it visited Courtney Walsh, and even Kumble, a touch late in life. But he must look within, for that is where the greatest strength resides. Today he is being unfair to himself and anyone who tells him otherwise is telling him tales. I believe Harbhajan Singh was born to be great, but now he must make his tryst with destiny. And he must do it himself. That ball pinged on leg stump can only be an occasional concession to a situation. http://www.espncricinfo.com/magazine/content/story/518468.html
Cricket Tragic Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 FWIW' date=' Harbhajan doesn't bowl the doosra "at all" after he was reported for his suspect bowling action a couple of years back.[/quote'] True. Earlier it was only when Broad was the ref. Chucking is legal these days. Not sure why he stopped bowling (or throwing) it.
Crookbond Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 True. Earlier it was only when Broad was the ref. Chucking is legal these days. Not sure why he stopped bowling (or throwing) it. There are some caveats. How much did he bend his arm?
Crookbond Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 Well, he looks so much better if he bowls the 'doosra'. Doosra 2.0 has made the comeback after 2010. :yay:

Doosra 2.0 has made the comeback after 2010. :yay:[/quote'] as i said b4...bhajji needed his doosra variation...he bowled it today and was successful...this is not the doosra 2.0 ...its the same doosra he possessed from long time lol...all this talk about ICC's call out...next time SHUT UP AND AGREE WITH ME :winky:

If you don't understand something, ask for a clarification mate. I know it is the same doosra but he has not bowled it since 2010.

I know it is the same doosra but he has not bowled it since 2010. the reason he did not bowl it was because of his lack of confidence...ICC had cleared him out before so that wasn't even on his mind..else why would he bowl it today...Pathan's early wickets allowed bhajji to test his doosra and now he has his confidence back
maniac Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 clearly chucking. :--D little Rich coming from a pak fan don't u think?
Crookbond Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012  the reason he did not bowl it was because of his lack of confidence...ICC had cleared him out before so that wasn't even on his mind..else why would he bowl it today...Pathan's early wickets allowed bhajji to test his doosra and now he has his confidence back Lack of confidence of what - the same delivery which he's bowling since 2001? :hmmmm2:
badmash Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 Lack of confidence of what - the same delivery which he's bowling since 2001? :hmmmm2: because he went into a hole after getting smashed on non-turning pitches..started bowling darts to lower his econ rate...ended up getting smashed more...basically he changed his game based on a few bad games which screwed him up...lost his confidence..
Crookbond Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 because he went into a hole after getting smashed on non-turning pitches..started bowling darts to lower his econ rate...ended up getting smashed more...lost his confidence Doesn't make sense man. Why did he stop bowling it after 2010? The event coincides with him getting reported. He stopped bowling the doosra after he was reported simple as that because he didn't want to be reported again. He thought he could be a good bowler even without it but the past 1 year was a kick on his backside. He now realizes he can not afford that luxury. Do not try to glorify him.

So he bowled the doosra again today to jeopardize his career because clearly he doesn't wanna get reported again and he was a good bowler before because of his other variations also...y did he stop bowling those?

He bowled today because he was forced too after being dropped from the side - that was the tonic needed to remove this misconception.
badmash Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 He bowled today because he was forced too after being dropped from the side - that was the tonic needed to remove this misconception. lol he had been in that place many times within the last year....anyway who cares why he bowled good today...conclusion is he has got his variations back...kudos for the hard work he put in
