Off late, I have been impressed with Umesh Kulkarni. Some of his Marathi films like Vihir and Valu have successfully captured the feel of rural India. http://moifightclub.wordpress.com/2010/03/19/umesh-kulkarnis-vihir-the-well-is-bloody-brillant-cinematic-masterstroke-and-a-must-watch/ With Natarang and Harishchandrachi Factory receiving cricitcal reviews and winning many international awards, I feel that Marathi cinema is moving in the right direction. They now need some good production houses to support them.
Yeah he is one of the few shining lights. In fact Marathi inseam is doing quite well .

You have to see how humble and intelligent Umesh is :agree: And how brilliant his short films are. Umesh is someone whose films (short and feature-length) have almost qualified to almost all the film festivals in the world. Marathi cinema is really doing well in the last few years.

Are you lumping ALL languages here into Regional cinema? Because that would be unfair. Lets take Bengali cinema, since that's perhaps your background. Do tell how Bengali cinema has outscored Hindi (Bollywood cinema) by miles. And why in last year Kollywood scored 10 such gems while Bollywood only did 2, say? You are right on the money about celebrity culture and start power in Hindi cinema. But your last point, about Directors are way off mark. There are enough decent Directors in Hindi cinema world that shall compete, and in my opinion beat, regional stable. In my personal opinion, one of the reason why Regional Cinemas have managed to hold up is because they were pretty strong in cultures with strong language and history. Specially Bengali, Malayali and so on. I dont quite see how Andhra and Punjabi movie industry has been anything but masala for most of their lives with Tamil and Marathi cinema somewhere in between. Bengali and Malayali will still be around for a while because of their literary strength and the natural imagination and freedom that comes with it. Hindi cinema, in particular, has suffered greatly at catering to NRI and wannabe NRI crowd. The language, alongside Urdu, has been severly depleted. If Bengali goes the same way the result wont be any different.
Yes, I am lumping all of them together (though it's numerically unfair). Bengali cinema is not really my background, though I am pretty much aware of it. You are right about Mallu cinema, and I would include Marathi films as well. And a lot of stuff in Tamil and Kannada as well. Finally, you will know how well the Bollywood directors know their stuff once you meet them. It's not an exaggeration to say most are second-rate in terms of their understanding and craft. They also lead an extremely uncertain and nerve-wracking life, since Bollywood is such a terribly unorganised industry. And a lot of wrong people move up the ladder since it's so random and chaplusi-based.

That to me is the key. We stopped creating good movies, in Hindi and other languages, when we stepped away from our core and started mimicking Western cinema. I havent seen either of these but I would certainly check them out. Thanks for sharing Yodasaab. :hatsoff:

See somewhere you also have to put the blame on cine-goers. When I was in school there was this lovely Prakash Jha movie on sports - Hip Hip Hurray, basically about football rivalry between two schools in Ranchi. It was such an amazing movie but I would guarantee you that only the movie flopped then, not many are aware even of today. In which case the question becomes why would decent Directors even bother making movies that masses dont support? Speaking of sports movie though, thats one area I would think Hindi movies have held their own against all regional movie stable put together. Even today we have had Pan Singh, Iqbal, Chak De etc etc. So its all not cut and dry between cinemas of India, I would think :winky:

Most of the blame would go to the way Bollywood functions. Apart from some 9-10 directors, no one is secure (in terms of being able to make another film). Everyday 2 new projects get signed up and 2 films get shelved. Every day some moody star is walking out of a film or a Bollywood producer is throwing a strange tantrum. And at the end of the day, the final call belongs to the star and the producer. The director is merely a tool; though he would be blamed for everything that goes wrong in a film. Brilliant scripts get floated around everyday, and get trashed into trash cans. And the system is so screwed up, that you can hardly fight against it. The biggest problem of Bollywood is the system; if that falls into place, everything else would become much better.

I couldnt find Girni. Did find Valu and Vihir though. Hope to check them soon. Thanks!
Girni is his student diploma film (which eventually helped him to make 'Valu'). Type 'Girni' and 'Umesh Kulkarni' in Youtube and I think you'll find it.

I took up a project as a director, half-way through the shoot the producer had trouble with his financiers and we had to shelve the project indefinitely. :((

A regular day at Bollywood. A system good enough to crush the spirits of the brightest in the business. :-)

Sure' date=' stop the expenditure, but don't go begging for gora faces to come to your party man. White man's approval shouldn't be the ultimate judge of quality.[/quote'] Dude, look at the context. Isnt the whole point of going to Cannes to get more foregin involvement and cross-functioning with hollywood and other industries? If you do not want any foreign involvement and consider an Indian only party as a success, couldnt that party be held in Mumbai, why go to Cannes?

You from Bishop Westcott? Nice. Another Ranchiwalla in town then. Speaking of Ranchi it had some terrific schools back then, maybe still does. Bishop Westcott, St Thomas, Loretto, Sacred Heart, Vikas Vidhayala etc...this is much before the days of mushrooming of DPS of course. You from one of the HEC/Mecon crowd mTC?

You really wanna go there? Bollywood comes up with its own share of gems. It has become fashionable to suggest that regional movies keep churning up gems while Bollywood is dishing trash. Back to the OP - Indian cinema becoming a joke. Quite true. In retrospect this trend has been ongoing perhaps since mid to late 80s. We are hardly original movie nation anymore, most of our stories are rehash from other countries, culture, language. Overall we are more of a popular movie making nation than good movie making nation. It is another side-affect of Americanization of India. Also on this whole gora point. That makes total sense. If there is an Indian movie function in Switzeland one would expect some Swiss to show up, if not all. If it is the same old South Mumbai brigade then basically it is the same thing as Filmfare India, isnt it? No need to get antsy about this.
that is the main reason film making has survived in India.

No, but lived very close to HEC. Live near Birsa Chowk.

^^ small world then, very small. I have spend many a months, if not years, in New Area Hinoo, more towards Birsa Chowk than Hanuman Mandir.
