he was a pathetic keeper but IIRC he wasn't that bad a batsman.
He used to be a solid batsman but keeping was always dubious and that is what lead to his ouster from Indian team. I would say the best WK/batsman in terms of technique we have produced in last 15 years. He could have easily played 10 years as WK/bat if he had even as decent glove work as Pappu. He had opened for India in SA and helped draw a test as well.

his keeping was just awful. He dropped Carl Hooper when he was on 1 (or maybe on 0) and he went on to make a double hundred :mad:

He was avid dropper even straight regulation catches against pacers. He used to drop them. Worst specialist keeper I have ever seen.

I recall commentator saying something like that, Kumble needs to rely on bowled or LBW klind of dismissals as caught behind doesn't seem to be an option. He was just awful as a WK.

Sidhu: Dasgupta is allergic to leather/Dasgupta is a goalkeeper I wonder if he would have got picked if Rod Marsh had not hyped him up so much. He was a pretty decent batsman though. No where close to the worst. Gandhi didn't score a ton. He made a good 70 odd in Mohali in the second dig after we got bowled out for 83 in the first innings.

Kumble played a few good knocks and he was better than someone like Ratra, even though he was a tailender. He didn't have great tailunt with the bat but fought it out. Oval 2007 Kolkata 1996 Last man standing in Sydney 2008 Second highest scorer in Jamaica 2006 in a low scoring test Good partnership with Kaif in Nagpur in 2006 which saved us Mumbai 1994 where we were 40/4 in the second dig before Tendulkar, Manju and Kumble got us enough runs to win (Sri might have made a few as well) Adelaide 2008

I am sure there are quiet a few who made 100's in India and then had their careers fizzled out... Agarkar,Bhajji,Kumble-don't count as it is an incredible feat for a lower-order bat to score a 100 Bangar in England---some of our current crop would be delighted to accomplish that Ratra probably should top the list. and not relevant to the topic,just had to get this off my chest when it comes to worst players scoring 100's....worst player to score a 100 against India-Andrew Hall
