bihutoli Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 Huh? Players are "eligible" to choose their partners. What are selectors there for? :dontknow: To make the 7th ranked player team up with the 207th to represent India.
Swing_n_Speed Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 To make the 7th ranked player team up with the 207th to represent India. :haha::haha: Touche. Well said mate :two_thumbs_up:
youngindia Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 Players are "eligible" to choose their partners. What are selectors there for? Tennis is an individual game first of all. its not a team game. Even in case of doubles, its about combination that works. even if you are the selector, why would you want a combiantion that don't even want to work with each other? and Bopanna, once again displayed the fact that they always place self before country. in tennis , top players have often missed davis cup matches and treated olympics very lightly.its largely an individual game.
Crookbond Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 We have some "unique" minds here. Tennis is an individual game but not the tennis at the Olympics. There's a process and you need to follow that. I am not suggesting Leander to be paired up with Bhupathi. What I find difficult to fathom is the players calling the shots. Sorry, you can't do that. If the AITA feel X is the right combination, they have every right to play that combination. The players can send in their recommendations about the combination but can't hold the AITA at ransom to pick & choose.

Crookbond Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 Excited to be playing with Bopanna, says relieved Mahesh Bhupathi "We are delighted to have been nominated as a team to the Men's Doubles event at the Games of the XXX Olympiad. The events of the last few days have been extremely challenging for all concerned, but we respect them as necessary steps in this process. "In making each of our decisions, we were guided by our strong convictions regarding what we believed was fair and we are pleased that this is reflected in the outcome. We are greatly appreciative of the support we have received from across the world," the statement added. As far as AITA's decision to pair up Leander with Sania Mirza for the mixed double event, Bhupathi said, "I think we need to wait till 28th (of this month) if Sania qualifies. "Obviously our first step was to go to London. We are hoping that she gets a wildcard and goes to London as well. They (AITA) told me that it depends on our performance in Wimbledon also." http://sports.ndtv.com/tennis/news/item/192200-excited-to-be-playing-with-bopanna-says-relieved-bhupathi

AITA cannot impose partnerships where one of the players doesnt have proper communication with the other - it is bound to end in disaster in a game where both players require near perfect coordination. What was wrong was this entire issue coming out in the open.

TBH - AITA should've decided on a pair about 12 months earlier. This 11th hour thing is absolutely wrong.
youngindia Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 If they have a problem with someone fine' date=' but you can't decide I want to play ONLY with X. .[/quote'] AITA is an authority. but who says authority can act without any sense? man management and recognition of ground realities are very important parts of any management. This is ignoring the very nature of doubles. In Doubles, its vital that the players choose and are comfortable their partner. AITA was stupid in imposing partnerships.poor man management and non recognition of ground realities. AITA didn't do their job properly..so they had a backlash. who says that official dom don't modify their stands becauase of a backlash against a decision? happens all the time.
coffee_rules Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 I will be rooting for MahiRo in the olympics.... to get out in the first round. :finger:
yoda Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 Not true according to what the newspapers say.....he said if Bhupathi and Bopanna don't want to play with him then he will play with the next highest ranked player but not with someone who is ranked very low.He would rather pull out which is fair because partnering a very low players gives him no chance of doing anything in the games....might as well pull out. It is only fair that if two teams are going then the best four make those teams and not best three with the fourth being the some very low ranked one. What chance does the second team have? Why should the top most player be made to form a weak team with a weak partner. As for Sania....The sania Leas pairing will get a direct entry while Bhupathi sania pairing will not.AITA has recommended the sania paes pairing . For me Leander paes represents Indian Tennis.Bhupathi has always been the brat with his personal interests coming first.Unfortunately he has taken Rohan Bopanna down the same path. This is also probably leander's last olympic games......sad that bhupathi decides to be such a bi#@# about this whole thing. You are right about the very low seed pairing for Paes essentially making it a meaningless affair for him. Regarding who is the brat, Bhupathi claims that Paes did all this by backing out of their partnership to boost his own rankings instead of working together for the Olympics. To me it seems that they should send Paes/Bopanna (Paes being top ranked and Bhupathi not wanting to play with him) and Bhupathi/Mirza (given their recent form). It is unfortunate that Bopanna has issues with playing with Paes also as he claims they haven't played much together.
asterix Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 What's this story going around that Ramesh Krishnan paired with young Leander to represent India in an Olympic. Did Ramesh made any drama at that time?
yoda Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 What's this story going around that Ramesh Krishnan paired with young Leander to represent India in an Olympic. Did Ramesh made any drama at that time? Donno about the scene then, now Yuki is saying Leander should take a youngster under his wings like RK did then. http://zeenews.india.com/sports/london-olympics-2012/tennis/krishnan-showed-faith-in-him-in-92-it-is-paes-turn-now-yuki_744209.html
asterix Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 Thanks Yoda. Thats nice of RK. Top class gentleman. The Rahul Dravid of Tennis... I agree with Yuki's views...
ravishingravi Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 The players have every right to decide whom they are comfortable playing with. What was wrong was this entire issue coming out in the open. So, if Tendlya tomorrow says that he is uncomfortable playing with Dhoni, will you build two teams to play for India ? Or 11 teams. We are talking about playing for "India". You are not merely playing for yoiur own glory but representing aspirations of millions at the biggest stage. And if players suggest that they can't get along and therefore want to put up a weak team and forego any possible chances of winning, I am sorry to say, it represents everything that wrong with Indian sports culture. There is no reason to believe that Bhupathi or Bopanna are Paes man friday by any stretch. But he is making it very clear that his aspiration is olympics medal and wouldn't mind playing with them. AITA is an incompetent body and our sports culture can allow any level of failure ( as Indian cricket has shown ) or indiscipline to not only allow Bhupathi and Bopanna's unethical behavior but also choose them to play together for India. Had this been body with self respect they would have just banned these two, get some new guy who values the India cap and send the message to one and all, your priorities as an individual come only second to the nation. Not really sure why Paes should play here. The board in its statement has criticized the two players but has selected them to play because they give the best chance. While, they have stuck India's No.1 bronze winner with the below average doubles player just to even things up.
ganeshran Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 So, if Tendlya tomorrow says that he is uncomfortable playing with Dhoni, will you build two teams to play for India ? Or 11 teams. Comparing a doubles tennis game to cricket. Bravo :hatsoff:
asterix Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 As per Bhupathi, he's already paired with Lee in 4 Olympics without winning any medal. :hmmm:
