here are some wins form no hope situations by bevan against quality attacks- benson & Hedges World Series, 1995/96 http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/65531.html The tournament resumed after Christmas with its most thrilling game yet. With the last man in, Bevan lofted the final ball straight to the boundary to extend Australia's winning streak to four, while West Indies completed their fourth straight defeat. The bowler, Harper, shared a high-five with Bevan; given that he had claimed a catch against him earlier, which the umpires correctly decreed had hit the ground, it was pleasant to see them dispel any tension. Bevan had scored 78 from 89 balls to rescue Australia from 38 for six, and Bobby Simpson, who had witnessed most of his country's 337 one-day internationals as player, commentator or coach, called it the best chasing innings he had seen. Hooper's role was not dissimilar in rallying West Indies from 54 for five. It was Reiffel, however, who took the match award, having helped Bevan to double the score in a critical eighth-wicket stand after bagging four for 29. VB Series, 2001/02 http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/65624.html Another match won single handedly ICC World Cup - 37th match, Pool A Australia v England http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/65531.html VB Series, 2001/02 http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/65269.html Carlton & United Series, 1996/97 some of the matches he won from no hope situations and there are more look at teh scorecards and bowlers he faced great player. http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/65552.html

They were all low scoring run chases.. only one total was above 200 that too only 245.. I know that innings. Good one. But apart from that he never had run rate pressure. He could protect his wicket and run twos and threes. His main scoring area was midwicket boundary. But he definitely failed when he had slighly larger target to chase.. http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/65574.html Giles bowled the last over with 15 runs to get.. could not hit a single boundary. while Bevan, normally one-day cricket's pin-up, was under fire for not scoring a single four in 45 not out quote from article. Another time Australia needed 10 from last 3 balls.. but he could make only 1 run. Another match against India.. he just could not pace the innings to overhaul the total of 303. http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/65647.html He had tremendous mental strength despite limitations much like Dhoni. But he did not exactly possess the power hitting ability of Dhoni Bevan has hit total of 21 sixes in 232 ODIs. Dhoni hit 10 sixes in a single match. He has 137 sixes in 206 matches. It is not like Bevan upstaged in fours. Dhoni 517 fours. Bevan 450 fours. Even considering he had to play on bigger grounds you can compare him with Martyn who played less number of games yet had hit 1 moer six than Bevan. Martyn was not exactly an explosive batsman by any stretch of imagination.

Dhoni has a habbit of taking the game to last over ,Even games which should have been finished earlier i remember a game where bevan hit a four of last ball to win but cricinfo does not have commentary records of those matches only alamanak report. As i listed bevan has won some great matches with the tail. all we did not have batting powerplay in those days where in the last 5 overs fielders can be in.

When Dhoni started his career he had the same amount of power play overs as Bevan. It was introduced only few years back. Anyway most of his runs didn't come in power plays. What exactly Bevan did? Did he finish games much earlier? No.. he took his own time. there was one match where he made 30 runs in 90 balls.. that is freaking crazy. As i said mentally very very strong like a typical Australian player. He didn't exactly possess the talent of Gilly, punter, Martyn, Mark waugh etc. But bloody minded. When there is a managable run chase and there are not many wickets left, he could influence his side to few wins. Dhoni could do exactly what Bevan could do. Run like crazy, bat with single minded determination. Bevan was great. No question. Dhoni was Bevan and some more.

Dhoni has had the advantage of powerplay overs for 2 or more years now,Bevan has finished more matches in 45-48 overs may be the scores were lower and bowling was better.Dhoni has not been able to do what bevan could in no hope situations batting with tail even when the run chase is managable ,dhoni has failed in those situations .some of bevan innings are extremly hard to match .but dhoni is allround a better odi cricketer as he keeps .

http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/65531.html (43 overs match) http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/65624.html Basically all the matches you listed finished in the last over of the match. Wuld you say bevan took matches to the last over when they should have been finished much earlier? Maybe good finishers know taking the match to last few overs gives them a good chance of winning it rather than going for glory by 44th-45th over, taking undue risks and not getting closer at all.

Is there even a need for the poll? Dhoni all the way. Like I mentioned in the other thread, Bevan never had the ability to hit boundaries at will like Dhoni has. Bevan is said to be one of the best finishers but when a team requires about 80-90 off last 10, I doubt if Bevan could have done it.

I could pick out games where Dhoni, the magnificant hitter could not hit a boundary for love or money. Anyways Dhoni > Bevan
