Tiger80 Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 In what could be termed as a strange diktat by a village panchayat in the Baghpat district of Uttar Pradesh, girls were ordered not to use mobile phones on the streets and women less than 40-year-old were banned from shopping. The panchayat of Asara village, in Ramala police circle, also banned love marriages. However, in a surprising decision, the panchayat also said that taking or giving dowry will be a punishable offence. Besides, the use of head phones by boys has also been banned on roads and in bylanes. "Love marriages are a shame for the society. It is very painful for the parents, specially the girl's family, as such marriages dent their respectability. Anyone doing love marriage, he or she will not be allowed to live in the village," Sattar Ahmed, a member of the village panchayat said. In yet another strange decision, the panchayat banned women under 40 years of age to visit the market. "This gives rise to crime," Ahmed tried to justify. The panchayat was attended by over 200 people belonging to the Jat and Muslim communities and most of them hailed the decisions. The Panchayat also instructed the girls to cover their heads when they come out of their houses. "This is for their safety," Ahmed argued. "Mobile is a curse especially for girls. I would have been more happy if the panchayat had completely banned girls from using mobile phones," Tarun Chaudhary, a local said. However, some of the locals appreciated the panchayat's diktat on dowry. "The panchayat said that anyone found taking or giving dowry will be socially boycotted. This is a welcome move and we all welcome it," Gajendra Singh said. "We know about this. A deputy superintendent of police is probing the matter and suitable action will be taken once I receive the report," Superintendent of Police, Baghpat, VK Shekhar told Mail Today. "This gives rise to crime," Ahmed tried to justify. Didn't the democratically elected state government of Karnataka attempt to put a similar restriction on women for the sake of "their safety"? They tried to ban women working after 8 PM. They said it was for their safety as women on the streets after 8 gives rise to crime.

beetle Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 The Judiciary should intervene here as the politicians will neither do anything nor let the administration do anything as these people are their vote banks.The panchayat members and others who gave this diktat should be sent to prison for sometime to show them what lack of freedom feels like.

They are the keepers and the enforcers of these diktats.
beetle Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 Panchayat's diktat: Villagers attack cops for probe Angry villagers on Thursday night attacked police officials and torched the motorcycle of a sub inspector in Asara village of Uttar Pradesh's Baghpat district for investigating panchayat's diktat against women. Police have lodged an FIR in Ramala police station against villagers and efforts are being made to nab the perpetrators of violence. "At least 15 persons have been identified and about 200 are yet to be identified," said VK Shekher, SP of Baghpat admitting that a sub inspector was manhandled in the village when he went there to collect information about the panchayat. According to sources, situation took an ugly turn when the sub inspector and his team detained two villagers for interrogation on Thursday night for convening an illegal panchayat and issuing inhuman decrees against women. The angry villagers then attacked the police team and thrashed sub inspector Prahlad Singh, while constables accompanying him ran away from the spot. Meanwhile, state women commission has also issued notice to the district police for decrees issued against village women in the panchayat. The panchayat meeting on Wednesday was third of its kind in the district in past one year. Though Asara is a muslim dominated village, people from all castes and communities participated in the panchayat to discuss prevailing social evils in the society. Majority of villagers held that frequent use of mobile phones was responsible for many persisiting evils in the society. According to sources, village pradhan Musharraf was not present in the panchayat but its decisions were unanimously accepted by the villagers. Civil aviation minister Ajit Singh represents Baghpat. Baghpat is one of those Western UP town that has weird sense of sexism. This is very similar to what is seen in Haryana and parts of Rajasthan. The other parts of UP is relatively much better. Not saying everything is great everywhere in UP but Western UP takes the cake.

This is very similar to what is seen in Haryana and parts of Rajasthan. The other parts of UP is relatively much better. Not saying everything is great everywhere in UP but Western UP takes the cake. Put these 3 parts together and create a new state - Purushkhand. Then, make Mayawati the CM, and watch her emasculate the misogynists.

"The villagers have issued an order to impose a fine of Rs.10,000 if a girl is found using a mobile phone, while a married woman will have to pay a fine of Rs.2,000 if found talking on a mobile outside her house," the official said. A senior official at the police headquarters said it was the first such diktat issued by a village panchayat in Bihar. "There is no precedent to such an order issued by a Bihar village panchayat," the official said. The Sunderbadi panchayat has also ordered women not to bathe by the roadside. "The decision was taken in a meeting attended by panchayat members and village elders," Mohammad Manzoor Alam, who presided over the meeting, told IANS today. Mr Alam said the villagers, mostly elders, favoured imposing the ban. "Mobile phone is the cause of all evils in our society, including increasing love affairs and the incidents of elopement," he claimed. Kishanganj is a Muslim-dominated district, and among the most backward districts in Bihar, with 60 percent of the population living below the poverty line.
