No' date='the problem is they cannot pick ashwin and are too boged down.guys who have played spin well in india from abroad had masterered the sweep.[/quote'] To play the sweep you got to pick the length and these guys you are talking about were pretty good else where too. I was talking about average batsmen.

Most of these pitch curators are seriously lacking upstairs. As if the wishes of the team captain mean nothing. You would think preparing a spinning wicket would be a specialty here (We used to field an all spin bowling attack at one point. ****!!!!) In any other country, this lot would have been fired a long time ago.

^ I feel so too. But' date=' don't they understand they would do well if the test match is more interesting - even if shorter? :dontknow:[/quote'] That's the silly logic broadcasters don't understand. If the match goes into 5th day, it's not like they will get substantially more eye balls compared to the other previous four days. It's most likely the people who are watching the 5th day are the same ones who watched the 1st day, so the ads will only go so far.

It's not about eyeballs, it's about the advertisers who have already booked the spots for 5 days.

I know someone would bring this up but my argument still holds - think about it. :D
a) There are no statistics to show to the advertisers that there is more probability of a 4-day match being more interesting than a 5-day match. In fact, subcontinent matches that end in 4 days are usually more one-sided. b) You sell more spots if you have 15 sessions in a match as opposed to 12, so you earn more revenue. The GRP of the channel would also be definitely higher for a match that runs for 5 days.

One factor which you did not discount is the "impact". :acute: It's the very same reason that ads cost more during play than after it. Extend the same logic for 4 day game versus a 5-day game. Also, it is not about a 4-day game versus a 5-day game. It is preparing a sporting pitch - simple as that.

a) In broadcasting terms, 'impact' would translate to TRPs. In India, TRPs go up whenever India bats (specifically when people like Viru, Sachin and Dhoni bat) and TRPs go down when India bowls. So, from this point of view also, it is more profitable to have India bat twice rather than batting once. b) I don't really know what a sporting pitch is - but most Indian pitches remain a highway till they start breaking down, and once they break down - they become a dust bowl. So, the ideal formula is to hold up for 3 days and then break down, so you have two 400+ innings and two 200+ ending up in a breathtaking chase. That way you get the centuries, the fifers and the final Indian win as well (most of the time). The ideal cricket match (from a broadcaster's POV) was the Wankhede Test in 2011 in which WI scored big, then India scored big too (thanks to Ashwin), then WI got decimated and India finally fecked up (thanks to Ashwin again). The match ran up to the last ball giving the channel sky-high ratings. There was also the small matter of SRT's 100th 100, where he scored 94 till Rampaul took his wicket ()
