Not really. During this tour the relations between Indian and Pakistan players were very good and also when Pakistan toured India in 1987. Yeah' date=' Srikkanth was attacked by some spectator but overall the series was played in very good spirit among the players. In a competitive match there is no way Miandad would not have batted or Srikkanth not opened. Even Azhar did not bat from India. Kapil and Prabhakar, India's best bowlers of the time did not even play the match.[/quote'] Good to know all these details. I was under the impression the relations between Ind-Pak were not that good during the times and that's why there were qute a few crowd problems that series. Other than Srikkanth attacked by a spectator, one or two odis were also abandoned as India was dominating the match. IIRC in one o fthe games Prabhakar had taken 3 early wkts and Pakis were 13/4 or something similar and the match was abandoned. That's why I find it surprising that the relations were good at the time when there so many incidents about crowd trouble during the tour.

But those were times with little security in entering the stadium and no barricades which was enough for some idiots in the crowd to disrupt the cricket by attacking the players. A similar incident happened when Pakistan had toured India in '87 as well. Those fences, searches, and barricades give almost an inhuman look to stadiums in the subcontinent, but given the regularity with which such incidents used to take place they were quite necessary. In fact we can count cricket lucky that there was no Monica Seles type incident.

I actually thought that such an incident will happen in Britain. I remember the Ind-Pak WC game then and as soon as the game got over the crowd poured in with players running through the crowd to the safety of dressing rooms. One of the Indian fans was injured in the melee (not sure whether he was attacked or got injured in the stampede) and the guy was bleeding from the head. Could very well have been a player and generally fans abroad are more jingoistic than the ones residing in native countries.

I am surprised such an attitude carried over to an Ind-Pak game. I remember in 90s there was an exhibition game between Ind-Pak in UK and the match had to be abandoned when India was just 2 runs away from the win as Paki fans stormed the pitch. Also, wasn't this tour when Srikkanth was actually attacked on the field by a pakistani spectator? Hardly the backdrop where result didn't matter and looking at the Pak bowling scorecard their best bowlers bowled full quota. Looks to me they took the game far more seriously than we did.
The exhibition match you are talking about was in June/July 1993 at Crystal Palace to raise funds for Imran Khan's cancer hospital. Imran was disgusted with Pak fans after the match. Back to the 1989 tour. One of the spectators who ran into the ground and came close to Srikkanth was found having a blade. Whether the intent to hurt him was there, one cannot tell. The crowd rioted when Pak was 28/3 off 13 ovs in one of the ODIs. But even that was treated as a one-off incident. In general, the Indians enjoyed the ghazal parties on that tour. But what this tour triggered off were the events in the 1990 Feb Hockey world cup which took place in Pakistan. India were playing Holland with the score 2-2 when some of the little terrorist thugs in the crowd held aloft a banner 'Indian dogs quit Kashmir' and burnt the Indian flag. The players left the field for a while. Once they came back, the Indian team was not at its best and Holland won 5-2. I think sporting relations between the 2 nations went down after that.

Not really. The tour was a reciprocation of Pak's tour of India in 1987 where they played 5 tests and 7 ODIs. Relations went bad after the 1990 hockey world cup, kashmir unrest, Ayodhya, mumbai 93 blasts, etc...

But how could you have taken on the whole stadium a la Sunny Deol in Gadar :dontknow: On a different note, IMO Indian team shouldn't have resumed the hockey match, boycotted the rest of the tourney and flown back home. There are some things which are more important than sports and when your national flag is burnt on the sidelines sports has no meaning.

@StatsRock, Good stuff bud. Never knew any of these details and the catalyst/turning point, if you will, of the cut-off in ties. Seriously I wonder whether Paki fans know what their "brothers" did for the bilateral ties to be cut-off when they talk about sports & politics not mixing :haha: I think most of them wouldn't see the irony even if it hit them over the head with Tiger Woods' golf clubs :winky:

When I came in to bat we needed 69 runs in five overs or so. I had a go at Mushtaq Ahmed who had taken two wickets and hit him for a couple of sixes. Qadir then came up to me said, "Bachchon ko kyon mar rahe ho? Hamein bhi maar dikhao" ("Why are you only hitting the kid? Hit me too.") Qadir was a great bowler and I was only playing my first series. I didn't say anything, but it fired me up. I took up the challenge and gave it a go. Ultimately we fell short only by four runs.
The story of his life :((

But his regular flogging of Pakis during WC and the @$$ whooping he administered to legendary Paki bowling in 2003 causing two of the "legends" to retire is how he will be remembered :two_thumbs_up: I hear Akhtar refused to bowl the 2nd over after he was butt r@**d in the 1st one in that game :cantstop:

I remember this match so vividly.. Srikkanth was the captain and in the end we lost by 3 runs.. would have been much worse had it not been for that innings by Sachin. I feel blessed to have witnessed it. Everybody knew after watching Sachin's debut that he was gonna go places. Aahh the good old days.. no internet.. no cable TV.. only Doordarshan, Radio and the newspaper. Life was so much simpler.

Exactly. I just cannot even imagine what would have been going on through the mind of the players after game resumed. On a side note the applause and cheer given by people of New Delhi during CWG and people of Chennai in 1999 to their team shows the difference between them and us.

Well said. What we saw in Chennai in 99 has never been seen and will never be seen in padosi land ever. That underlines the difference as you rightly said. Other key difference - not even a single Ind-Pak match has ever been abandoned in India owing to crowd trouble but that happened in Pakiland - abandonment and crowd trouble in 89 and also the levels they stooped to in an odi series in late 70s when India forfeited the match coz Pakis were about to lose the match and started bowling wide bouncers :haha: And did I mention that no Paki player has ever been assaulted by an Indian spectator ever while our captain was assaulted on the ground in Pak in 89. I guess this is what being "large hearted" does to you :winky:

well sorry to know how a nation of most civilized cricket fans suffered because of extremist elements on "other" side they regularly got to face... You guys have quite brilliant memories and do remember second by second details of such incidents, so if StatsRock or anyone else do know with "^such detail" what exactly happened when during a Test match vs India, 1987, Ahmedabad; match was almost got abandoned, all players and umpires went off the field but after few time Imran Khan came back in ground with all of his players wearing helmets and Pakistani team actually did fielding in remaining match with helmets on :) any genuine reason for such 'stupid' act? Moreover I think I should not mention 99 Kolkatta Test when they got to evacuate 100,000 most civilized cricket fans on earth WITHOUT ANY REASON (or there was any?) to finish the match. 96 WC Semi-final... well leave that, it was not against Pak :)

I am extremely sorry for the way Karachi crowd behaved with your team right after the match when India won; 2005, Paksitan vs India ODI match

Yes, but show me a match which actually was abandoned against Pakis. Coulda woulda shoulda don't count. As for Kolkatta, kudos to Indian authorities to continue the match even after evacuating the stadium as we all know the route Pakis take - "oh we are losing so let's abandon the game as it will not show up as a loss" :haha: Maybe that's why after inflating the stats with such "abandoned" games and Sharjah they are pawned time and again when it really matters and where they can't get the match "abandoned" :hysterical: I know how Pakis wish they had all the WC matches in Karachi where they could have simply "abandoned" the 5 matches instead of being 0-5 :giggle: And care to tell us when a Paki player was assaulted the way Srikkanth was? Also since you are so eager to bring up an example of SL-Ind game care to tell us when was the last time a SL team was attacked, shot at and injured in India?

lol, indians blaming other countries for crowd troubles, now i have heard everything , i still remember kambli crying like a scolded girl when the semifinal was awarded to srilanka as the crowd had started setting themselves on fire sensing an indian defeat , than again in 99 soon after the famous chennai victory pakistan was destroying the indians in culcutta ,inevitably the crowd started brewing up trouble , the pakistanis still played on and beat the indians, admirable stuff , than we have numerous other instances of people getting hit by stones and bottles (kaluwithrana ) etc, and ofcourse the monkey chants to complete an impressive resume . a stand or two being burnt down during a match in the 90s was infact a very regular occurance in the indian stadiums .
