jusarrived Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 whats the right thing to do , when you come across a begger ? your told , by giving money you are not helping them but only encouraging begging . well , thats true ,but personally i find it very difficult to say no ..the dilema is , what if its a genuine case where the person is actually hungry & the money could buy him a meal ? This one time , i was stuck in the traffic & see this kid knocking on my car door . He was not older than five , so i thot i will make an exception and was trying to pull my wallet out , by the signal was out i changed my mind and started driving .. the kid though had noticed & i cud see him running behind my car & he had covered a good 20m before i stopped again in between moving traffic . Gave a him 100buk note . The thing I will never forget though is the smile ( biggest ever ) which he had on his face . Then he runs to the pavement , probabaly shows the money to this other kid , who was three (?) & they both run along waving at me till the next signal . So what do you do with these people ?
Utalk Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 Very tricky situation to deal with. There was a time when you only encountered them back home but now here in UK you see many begging on the street. Normally I give to those who seem genuine but then again how you decide who is genuinely needy and who isn't. I came across an Asian guy here in Manchester who told me a sob story that how he was robbed and he needed money for bus ticket. I offered him to buy a bus ticket but he walked away. Hours later same guy was seen asking others to help with same BS story. Kids are the real dilemma esp back home but we all know they work for criminals. I go with my gut feeling and give to some.

Don't give them anything atleast not the money.If you still want to give them something buy some eatables for them and give it to them

nballa Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 i give money but feel sad by the pointlessness of it. is it going to alter his life, will it take him off the streets, a few bucks wont change that. its upto the government to make sure kids are off the streets. the US has bums too but i've never seen kids begging. rest assured if there is a kid on the streets the cops will do something.

bajrang Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 i look dead straight into their eyes and say " get the phuck out of my face, you are not going to make me feel sorry just because your dad could afford to phuck your mom but couldn't afford to phucking raise you" or " say one more thing to me and i will bash your skull and nobody will dare to help you" . i usually say really nasty thing to beggars but with a smile so nobody around thinks i am being mean to them. in short i hate people who tries to emotionally manipulate other people, though i do give money to really old and handicapped.

Mariyam Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 I generally hand over the fruits that I am carrying. Sometimes I hand over money. I however always have guilt pangs if I don't give them anything. And there is an automatic thought process that counters it, with the rationale that the loose change I would give them isn't going to change their life for the better. However, if I am to buy flags/books etc while waiting at a signal, I let myself be 'fleeced' and don't take change back. And never ever give money to kids or people with kids. It will only encourage more people to push kids into beggary as kids are the ones who earn the most. Secondly, these kids themselves have a long life ahead of them. If they dont get easy money, they still might learn some skills to earn. Otherwise, if they continue getting easy money by begging, they will take to that life for ever

Crookbond Posted July 26, 2012 Posted July 26, 2012 I never hand over anything but food. Twice I have had kids whom I have lend money, only for them to go and play in the video games parlor. So, I'm done lending money. I use my fasts to donate food to the under privileged. For example, I fast a day and skip one meal - I prepare it at home though. I lend the same meal to people who aren't privileged. It makes me understand the value of food and keep my feet on the ground. It also helps me recognize that I am in a good position than a lot of other people in this world.
