He was saved due to the lack of YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. These days it's impossible to get away which such plagiarism.

No denying his talent which were all too obvious in the hundreds of original great scores. But, given that we know he has lifted tunes from western hits is he a lesser musician? Firstly, is he making up for an absence of talent? We know the answer is no. Secondly, is he robbing other musicians of fame or royalty? Like mccenley mentions he was in the pre internet age where even in this day and age you will find whole districts in India that hasn't heard a coldplay tune. So it is entirely plausible that for most people in India ABBA would be something they would never have heard till their dying days. Under those circumstances it's fair to say that he stole no thunder from the western artists. But do lots of people think he is a great musician because in their minds he scored the tracks that he had in reality lifted? Sadly, yes. The only right thing to do then would be to look at all the tracks he had not entirely composed on his own, take them away and then from the music that he created by himself reassess if he was truly a great artist? I do. And for the tainted tracks I like to think of him as bringing some great music and sharing it with those who would never have heard it otherwise. Sort of like, check out this music I heard? Aint it cool? I for one would never want my childhood to not have "mil gaya... Humko saathi mil gaya!"

I didn't grow up in that era so find it tough for me to relate. For me personally (since I'm in the innovation business), I have no respect for people who plagiarize and don't give credit. This is despite the fact people in India couldn't listen to Abba. For me the intent isn't quite there so I would rather appreciate someone who would've said - You know this music was made my Abba and I tailored it to Indian cinema. The credit and the intent is still there.

The credit and the intent is still there.[/quote'] Creativity, inventiveness and originality is core to my line of work as well so we are not subscribing to different values. I heard RD's music and many of the tracks he copied from in my mom's tapes. I enjoyed them both equally since as a consumer I am not losing my pants over the ethical issue. This is of concern only to decide for ourselves, does RD deserve respect as an artist or is he just a two-bit huckster who peddled stolen goods. How we remember him is up to us I guess.
