EnterTheVoid Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ju2FP8LIOLM]Dispatches: When Cousins Marry ¦ 360p [1/4] - YouTube[/ame] Cousin marriages cause genetic defects. Instead of stopping the practice, the parents blame the doctors claiming the medicines they prescribed created the physical/mental deficiencies in their children! Criminals of the worst order these parents are, complete disgrace to humanity.
Crookbond Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012  More than half of the problem in our country is mis information.
ganeshran Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 Its a stupid tradition in the south and people refuse to accept facts. It was ok 2-3 generations back when no one knew of the risks caused by marrying relatives, but now that the risks are clearly documented and widely available, its sheer stupidity to continue the same in the name of tradition and put unborn babies at a risk of disability.
Crookbond Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 ^ Not just in south ganno a lot of other places in India too - that's besides the point. I do not think these people know of the risks. Probably, a chapter in schools on incest?
Stuge Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 thats why I say genetics should be taught to every student in school. Our education system is pretty vague .

If you have not been following ICF recently, please do not utter that word Its not there in the north. Not sure about east and west. There are some places in the North - remote areas I know of for sure where this practice exists.
Prakat Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 There's an Elvis movie called Kissing Cousins... Of course it was pandering to the incest-friendly deep south.
Andrew Peter Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 Cousin marriages are considered a taboo in North India . I was initially surprised to see people in Maharashtra and South India marrying with their maternal cousins . Apart from that its also common among Muslims worldwide .
beetle Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 thats why I say genetics should be taught to every student in school. Our education system is pretty vague . true...if only the families gave it as much thought as they give to matching horoscopes.

In the south you can marry your Father's Sister's son or daughter or your Mother's Brother's son or daughter. Some even go as far as marrying their own sister's daugter if the age difference is not too much. The reson they do that is to keep the wealth in the family and also the parents think that if their girl is married to a close relative then she will be well taken care off and also due to dowry issues. I my family we have had many family problem due to this issue. My uncle'f family dont talk to me because I did not marry one of their daughter. So I think the root cause for this problem is treatment of women and dowry.
exams Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 muslims have most cousin marriages...i have read that close to 75 % marriages in muslim community are cousin marriages
ganeshran Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 Main culprits are family elders , they just wave away the overwhelming evidence that exists about the risks of marriages among cousins. I would also blame the movie industry to a certain extent for further fuelling the stereotype by often showing such relationships in a positive light in rural themed movies. In some orthodox families, first preference is given to a cousin and only if no one is available they start looking for a match outside the family.
panther Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 muslims in sc it happens not sure about other muslim country's but it is recommended to marry from outside close friends and family.

It confused me as a kid as it is not that common within my relatives. I was even educated about risks of cousin marriages from my parents. Apparently my dad's friend married his cousin and they had 3 kids of which 2 were born with defects. Seeing this my parents are dead against cousin marriage and discourage my other relatives too. :icflove:
Stuge Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 If you have not been following ICF recently, please do not utter that word why ? whatsup with that word ? whats wrong in making people understand bit about Mendel works .
EnterTheVoid Posted August 27, 2012 Author Posted August 27, 2012 Going ahead with cousin marriages and endangering the lives of future children on the basis of the practice being culturally acceptable is nothing short of criminal in my opinion. Even more unforgivable if the risks are already known, as they are now!
1983-2011 Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 muslims have most cousin marriages...i have read that close to 75 % marriages in muslim community are cousin marriages i hope u didnt revise from the same sources for ur exams
