It is not like this guy is too old, it is not like he wanted to quit when this current series started.As captain you should be able to guide your team thru tough periods. When everything is going smooth there is no need to have great captain and great captains have led their teams thru tough times and got their teams over that hump. This guy was given captaincy on the platter even though he never was the right one and his team has great success and first hint of trouble he is quitting. He was a liability with the bat. What was he supposed to do? Continue scoring 20s and 30s series after series? He should have remained just because he is a captain?

Extending your career inspite of underperforming is not the right thing to do and since he is clearly saying that at his age he lacked the motivation to do any better for England he was correct in resigning and letting someone else with the hunger to get the chance.

If you call him liability as batsman then what do we call Indian batsmen.

He scored 107 runs in 6 innings against South Africa. 5 hundreds since he was captain have come against the WI team which is the lowest benchmark for batsmen to score. His last innings of real note came in the Ashes 2010 series at Brisbane. Heck he even pretty much struggled against India and SL. His travails against Pakistan need no mentioning.

Averaging 31 in last 25 tests (last 2 years) - if that's not a continued failure for an opener of a top side, then what else can be said. Two Indian batsmen who have been in bad form and getting old, retired from cricket recently. Do you think Dravid and Laxman chickened out?

What do you mean here Dexter .. Do you mean to say Strauss was good off late or bad .. As you can see from your own stats he was clearly under performing .. Even in last years Indian series when all batsmen made merry he failed to score a single 100. He has decent figures only against West Indies and Australia, not counting Bangladesh. He realized that he hasnot been good enough for the English side and hence took the decision. Plus he has Cook to take the Captaincy responsibility and hence knows that he is leaving the side in good hands.

Finally, Dravid/Laxman already gone and we even want Sachin to quit. Ab bol! You are equating failing in 10-14 Test matches to that in 45 matches!
