With or without KP, England will still put up a good fight. Remember the 2006 series, Strauss, KP, Bell were relatively new, Cook and Monty were on debut yet England nearly won that series.

Nearly won the series.. Took a 100+ lead in the 1st test and absolutely thrashed us in the 3rd test at Mumbai in what has to be one of the most painful test defeats for us in the last 10 years.

Even the next one at home was won after we chased a record total in the 4th innings which can at best be described as freakish. Essentially, England have always given us a good fight in India barring the 1993 series when they were swept 3-0. And with the issues we have with our test batting, I do not expect things to change much in the upcoming series either. We would still win it but as I said, England would put up a good fight unless BCCI agrees to Dhoni's request of rank turners.

From the BBCs Pat Murphy -

"Andy Flower and Alastair Cook were central to this because they feel it is still too raw. There are some players in the England dressing room who don't have much time for Kevin Pietersen at all. It has been left to linger on for too long in my opinion. I believe he will play for England again in New Zealand in February but he will want the work flow sorting out as he has realised he has overstretched himself and some of the players can't stand him at the moment."

With Strauss not around there needed to be an opener and a backup, and Bairstow was always going to be slightly ahead of Taylor when it came to it between the two...
