diga Posted October 17, 2012 Author Posted October 17, 2012 From NDTV- Kejriwals accusations against Gadkari The IAC says that it has documents to show that excess land was acquired for the building of the dam in the state's Vidarbha district. After the dam the built in 1997, more than 100 acres of land were lying unused. The farmers from whom it was acquired wanted it back but it was instead given to the BJP president, the IAC says, adding that according to the law, any excess land must be returned to the farmers. "Mr Gadkari is farming that land. Then why can't the farmers whose land this is do the same," Mr Kejriwal asked. Mr Kejriwal also said that the irrigation deparment took two years to react to the farmers' plea. But when Mr Gadkari wrote a letter asking for the excess land, within four days, Ajit Pawar, who was then irrigation minister, acted and the land was given to the BJP president. Not just this, Mr Kejriwal claims that the Mr Gadkari asked for 11 acres of land to be given to a company, Gems of India and this too was readily agreed to. When the company said it can't use the land, this too was given to Mr Gadkari, according to IAC. It has also accused Mr Gadkari's supporters of threatening farmers whose land has been acquired in Maharashtra's Umred district. Taking the example of a farmer whose land has been allegedly grabbed by Mr Gadkari and his associates, Mr Kejriwal said, that the farmer was called to his own land by the local authorities and told he must give it up. Despite his protests, he was told that the land had been taken over by Mr Gadkari and told that he could do whatever he wanted. Mr Kejriwal and his associates also said that the reason why the BJP never brought up the irrigation scam in the Maharashtra assembly was that it was beneficial to Mr Gadkari's industries. "Instead of water being used to irrigate farms, it was being used by Mr Gadkari's factories," Mr Kejriwal said, "and the waste from these factories is polluting the rivers." Showing a photograph that he claimed was of a factory owned by Mr Gadkari next to a dam, Mr Kejriwal said this was the reason that no canals were built for irrigation. "All the water is diverted to the factories, which is why farmers are committing suicide," he said. Vidharba has the highest rate of farmers' suicide in the country. "This is a big question before India, whose interests does Mr Gadkari represent? And do his interests clash with those of the farmers in Vidarbha?" Mr Kejriwal asked at a packed press conference. Mr Gadkari has already been accused by IAC activist Anjali Damania, who was present at today's press conference, of trying to persuade her to not try and expose details of the irrigation scam. Ms Damania had said that Mr Gadkari told her he and Mr Pawar's uncle, union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar, have business interests and that activists don't "understand" how these things work. This was repeated at the press conference today. Mr Gadkari has since taken Ms Damania to court, but NDTV had revealed that he had indeed written to the Union water resources minister to release funds worth several hundred crore for work that was incomplete. The contractor for that project is a known associate of Mr Gadkari. He has defended the letter saying it was in the interest of farmers in Vidarbha, which was facing severe water shortage.

She filed several RTI applications and exposed the scam. She filed a PIL in Bombay High Court in April 2012. Agitated by the scam, she met Sh Nitin Gadkari on 14th Aug 2012 to request him to take up the issue strongly. She was completely shocked to hear Gadkari's response. He said - "How could you expect us to speak against Mr Sharad Pawar? Yes proof of nexus between politicians across the spectrum. But how does this constitute as corruption. Gadkari's business ventures was well known for some time now atleast in Maharashtra. He is a businessman more than a social entrepreneur. And hence what ? I ll be back home to see this and pass judgement. But on the face of it, it seems like the weakest expose recycling known facts. I was hoping for something more from IAC.
