Chandrasekhar Vallabhaneni, a software professional from Andhra Pradesh, and his wife Anupama, who were arrested by the police last month, were convicted for gross or repeated maltreatment of their child/children by threats, violence or other wrong. The prosecution had proposed a sentence of 18 months for the father and 15 months for the mother in the case which was upheld by the Court. Reacting to the Court verdict, Indian officials in the Ministry of External Affairs said,"our embassy in Norway has been in touch with the Indian nationals involved in the case. "Even during the course of their detention the Consular Officer has been in touch with them. We will continue to render necessary consular assistance and will be in touch with their lawyer." Justifying the arrest and charges, Kurt Lir, Head of Prosecution, Oslo Police Department, had told PTI that "there were burn marks and scars on the body of the child, who has also been beaten by the belt." Following this story, the authorities were notified by the school of possible abuse. Couple went back to India left the children with the grandparents and naively went back to Norway. They were promptly convicted and jailed. Sounds very naive of the parents. I think Indians who go abroad should be trained enough about the way things work outside in other countries. One cannot have their way with kids, like they do in India. An Indian father in Kaneda was once called by child services because he was playing in the balcony of his first floor apartment with his toddler daughter. He was throwing the girl up and catching to make the child laugh. Somebody called up 911 saying he was harming the girl.
coffee_rules Posted December 4, 2012 Author Posted December 4, 2012 Isn't it the same case as before ? No the previous couple had their child taken away, this time the child is in India while the parents are arrested.
Lurker Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 I know of atleast one Indian couple in England who are currently under scanner for similar behavior. It must be absolutely stressful for the parents. Looks like kids are often asked questions in European schools if their parents beat them and stuff..And if the answer is in the affirmative the Social Services take over. This is absolutely retarded. Seems like in Europe Government are more on the side of animals (read Germany lol) than parents!:agree:
yoda Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 This is insane. Do they even warn the parents before just throwing them in jail? I mean, even if you are caught DUI, you get off lightly for a first time offense.

coffee_rules Posted December 4, 2012 Author Posted December 4, 2012 http://www.ibtimes.com/norway-court-sentences-indian-couple-jail-maltreatment-son-917147 "They are facing child abuse case and are charged with gross or repeated maltreatment of their child/children by threats, violence or other wrong, under section 219," Kurt Lir, Head of Prosecution, Oslo Police Department, said, according to a Rediff.com report. "There were burn marks and scars on the body of the child, who has also been beaten by the belt," he added. The couple from the Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh in India was arrested after their son had told his school authorities that his parents threatened to send him back to India for wetting his pants in the school bus. The alleged abuse had happened between 2007 and March 2012, and the arrest was made nine months after the child had complained to the school authorities about his parents. So there is circumstantial evidence. The kid being in India hinders any kind of defense on part of the parents in the case. However, the Indian government has declined the diplomatic interference in the latest case, stating that it is a legal process involving a private citizen and the law of the country he resides in. Norway has stringent childcare laws that forbid any kind of physical abuse of a child. The government is useless as always. When a Visa or PP renewal is needed they charge all kinds of fees and some more. Parenting is culture specific in several regions of the world and the issue has also stirred a huge debate on parenting norms in India, where mild physical abuse such as a slap by hand or stick to discipline the child is considered normal. The traditional view is that scolding and giving mild punishments to the child is a must for bringing up him or her as an obedient and well-mannered citizen, and corporal punishment is still practiced in many schools in the country. However, the child right activists feel that it is time India strictly enforced the laws against the corporal punishment and child abuse by parents. “Research all over the world has shown that violent methods are not good or healthy ways of parenting and teaching. The Norway episode ought to be a wake-up call for Indian parents, and those who lack skills in bringing up their children in a non-violent way, should be offered help and counseling,” wrote T S Sudhir on Firstpost.com. “The parents, yes they do need to understand that there are guidelines and values which is there may not be in India, but abroad which they follow very strictly and if you decide to live abroad then you have to be Roman in Rome you don't have a choice,” Kushboo, an actor-turned-politician, told IBNLIVE.com However, child right activists also opine that the punishment handed out to the parents in this case may traumatize the children as Sai Sriram and his two year old brother are constantly demanding to see their parents. The couple's children are currently living with their grandparents in India. Sad case considering the kids are in India. I feel they could have gone to Norway with the kids and fought the case in a better way.

The govt would have interfered (applied diplomatic pressure) if they were still Indian citizens just as they did in the other case earlier this year. Atleast the embassy or consulate general is providing these two some kind of support. Agar bahut shokh hai foreign mein rahne ka tou live and behave like locals i.e. stop beating or thrashing your kids. India mein sab chalta hai but not in western countries. Anyways since these couples are no longer indian citizens the govt can do nothing except provide them some support through the embassy in Norway.
coffee_rules Posted December 4, 2012 Author Posted December 4, 2012 ^ he works for TCS and they are Indian citizens. http://www.hindustantimes.com/India-news/Hyderabad/Indian-couple-s-sentencing-violates-child-rights-Family/Article1-968350.aspx Reacting to Chandrasekhar's arrest, TCS hoped that the family has the strength and resilience to get through these trying times. "The court has given a verdict based on its assessment of the facts as they pertain to the case. This is very unfortunate for all concerned. We have provided help and necessary support to the employee to ensure due process and legal support. We hope that the family has the strength and resilience to get through these trying times," a TCS spokesperson said
Crookbond Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 Just follow the law of the land where you live.
suraj Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 Why did they go back? Why not stay in India instead of going to jail?? Without knowing the facts it is hard to say whether it was abuse so deserved punishment or overboard punishment
CG Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 Just follow the law of the land where you live. Yup they are citizens of that country and they have accepted the laws.
The Outsider Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 Man, I can't understand the "we need to know the facts", "different cultures" etc. Okay, fine the occasional slap can be attributed to that but bruises and burn marks from being beaten by a belt? You guys have got a different moral compass! These kind of parents should not be allowed near any child.

Its another thing I was literally "ROFLing" and I ended up getting struck multiple times. Every time I visit my parents I remind my mom about the belt incident. :P

I think Indian companies should advice their employees about local laws before sending them on deputation to other countries and especially countries like Norway...

I think Indian companies should advice their employees about local laws before sending them on deputation to other countries and especially countries like Norway... So, beating up the hell out of your child with a belt in India is fine, if you forget about the legal consequences? What could the kid have been doing at home to deserve this? Spilling coffee? Not making up his bed? Not having breakfast? Saying a few bad words? What wrong can a child do to deserve such inhumane punishment? A child would complain to the authorities for nothing?

It's not fine in India...but then there are many things not "fine" in India...you cannot deny that these things not happen in India. Start from infanticide, child marriages etc.. Beating comes way down the list...

Even murders and rape happen in Norway, so do they say let all the child abusers go free till we can make sure there are no more murders and rapes in Norway?
