pensionplan Posted December 14, 2012 Posted December 14, 2012 Here is a look at the batting averages of some great batsman of this past generation that debuted around 1990 or so excluding the minnows BD and Zim. Jacques Kallis - 54.47 Kumar Sangakkara - 53.33 Brain Lara - 52.53 Sachin Tendulkar - 51.50 Ricky Ponting - 51.10 Shiv Chanderpaul - 51.09 Rahul Dravid - 49.78 Kallis leads the pack comfortably followed by Sanga and Lara taking the 2nd and 3rd spots. Looks like Kallis will end up as the best batsman of this generation all things considered and if one takes his bowling into account certainly the best cricketer of our times. Hope folks realize that and give where credit is due and not take this as a slight on any of their favorite cricketer(S).
amiret Posted December 14, 2012 Posted December 14, 2012 at least he is the 4th best batsman of our time.
jairamesh Posted December 14, 2012 Posted December 14, 2012 So on average Kallis gets only 5 more runs than Dravid per innings. :giggle: Gimme Dravid anyday. I will take those chances.

The Outsider Posted December 14, 2012 Posted December 14, 2012 What's the rationale behind removing Bangladesh and Zimbabwe - presumably the fact that their bowling attacks were poor, I guess? Ignoring the fact that Zimbabwe had a decent attack till early 2000s, then why not give more weight to performing against the better bowling attacks among the remaining 8? Kallis has piled on runs against West Indies and New Zealand and failed against the better Australian, Pakistani, and English attacks. How is that factored in this simplistic analysis?

But say that to BB who always looks at stats to say SRT is the best of all time without caring to look into other aspects. So just looking at the stats without the minnows(Zim and BD) Kallis is the best followed by Sanga and Lara. If you want to look at this objectively beyond stats which I do, I am sure many do not have a problem agreeing that for India RD and VVS played more stellar knocks in tougher situations than SRT even though SRT played many more matches and innings than the other two gentlemen in Tests. So my point is we cannot have it both ways. If one were to just look at stats alone(as BB does gloating over 100 centuries and what not) without caring to judge the quality in those numbers then we cannot worry about getting into all the specifics you want to get into. On that premise Kallis outguns everyone in Test cricket.
Lurker Posted December 14, 2012 Posted December 14, 2012 My list - Sachin > Lara > Ponting > Dravid > Kallis > Sangakarra >Sehwag > Shivnarine Chandrapaul. Just so we are clear Sachin-Lara is very close. If Sachin was 100, Lara was 99...you get the picture.

Lurker Posted December 14, 2012 Posted December 14, 2012 What's the catch? :hmmm: Time. Its Friday, didnt have enough time to write a whole treatise, else you know me :giggle:
punjabi_khota Posted December 15, 2012 Posted December 15, 2012 Who the **** is this OP pensionplan ? and how is this random one stat supposed to end years to discussion. Bhaissab please search the forum history.

Just so we are clear Sachin-Lara is very close. If Sachin was 100, Lara was 99...you get the picture.Good choices(excepting perhaps She-Wag). But if you belong to BB school of thought and use stats alone to judge players then Kallis is the best(minnow adjusted - even sites like cricinfo filter out Zim and BD from time to time for their analysis). And it does not end there. Sanga and Lara top SRT too. And if SRT hangs around with a view to pad his stats as he is being doing in the name of 'love of the game'(as if RD or VVS love it any less) it will get much worse for him stats wise.
vvvslaxman Posted December 15, 2012 Posted December 15, 2012 You gotta exclude runs against India considering our bowling standard last few years

Me and BB are polar opposite, but I would much rather defend him than you since he is somebody I have talked much with, unlike you. Plus my pension plan (401k) is effed anyway :winky::winky: With regards to Kallis. He is an accumulator whose end results make him look larger than he is. He is lucky to have played in an era when Mcgrath, Ambrose, Walsh, Wasim, Waqars had either retired, were on the verge, or when he did play them (McGrath) he was totally screwed. Unlike Sachin or Lara, who met these greats at their best. Dont put Kallis in the same bracket :winky:
punjabi_khota Posted December 15, 2012 Posted December 15, 2012 ****ing irony this. On one hand he is like "Use just one number, no adjustments etc" and then goes ahead and removes runs against BD and Zim. Poor trolling attempt, 3/10, DTW would be ashamed.

pensionplan Posted December 15, 2012 Author Posted December 15, 2012 You gotta exclude runs against India considering our bowling standard last few yearsLast few years? You got to be kidding me. We were No.1 ranked Test nation in the world for 14 months or so not so long ago with the same bowling managing to get 20 wickets regularly to get to that No.1 Test status.

Zimbabwe till the turn of the century (i.e before the white players were shunned) was a better side than today's NZ or WI in my opinion.

Kallis has scored 701 runs in 5 tests against us at an average of 116.83 in the last 3 years. Most runs, best average against any side. Against India 16 tests 28 innings 1585 runs 1 century 1 fifty Against Bangladesh 6 tests 7 innings 317 runs 6 centuries 5 fifties Not much of a difference isn't it.
