vvvslaxman Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 Two identical dismissals. They werent brutish deliveries by any means. May be we have to reconsider his position as opener.
Crookbond Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 Very bad shots in fact - I don't see Rahane batting in any other position though.
CG Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 Rahane is stuck. He is not getting forward to finn.He has to sort it out.
saneindian Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 Worrying signs for Rahane. He never looked technically deficient so far but the last two dismissals have exposed that flaw. Needs to turn it around quickly in the last 2 games.
Tendulkar_Bhai Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 He plays one too many shots and the upper cut off a short quick delivery is always risky but hes nothing like GG or Vijay who have technical problems with quicks, its more his shot selection which comes with experience. How we can dismiss him already is a disgrace and he will be given a few series at least like kohli /rohit have been. He already showed class opening in England in much tougher conditions than anything in India
Ultimate_Game Posted January 19, 2013 Author Posted January 19, 2013 The problem is Rahane is playing in a format which doesn't suit him the best. He averages in mid 30s in List A cricket as well and his strongest suit is longer format (Tests) but just like what selectors did with Rohit, Rahane is being given a chance which is not his strength and based on his performances in odis/T20s he will be pushed down the pecking order for Tests Meanwhile players who are more suited to odis (Ishank Jaggi and Kedar Jadhav who both average in 50s in List A cricket) are languishing in domestic cricket  When will our selectors and board start differentiating the formats and get it in their heads that success in one format doesn't guarantee success in others, and newbies need to be given a break in the national side in their preferred format, not in whatever is most convenient for selectors.
namasteji1 Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 I think he is over rated. Probably will fail in tests as well.
Ultimate_Game Posted January 19, 2013 Author Posted January 19, 2013 I think he is over rated. Probably will fail in tests as well. Yup, judge his Test credentials based on his odi performances. Maybe it's not just BCCI or selectors who can't differentiate between the formats
Cevno Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 Not only Rohit and Rahane, they did the same with Badrinath before too. Plus don't forget Rahane has been a sub for 6/7 months now, and then asked to open straight up when he isn't really a opener. Similar people wrote off Badrinath after one ODI series in Srilanka.

NareshK Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 Yup' date=' judge his Test credentials based on his odi performances. Maybe it's not just BCCI or selectors who can't differentiate between the formats [/quote'] Gavaskar was saying during commentary how he was leaving a big gap between bat and pad and not entirely coming forward during both these identical dismissals. Its a technical flaw which he has to work on in nets and not quite ready to be a regular opener. I think he will still get a chance in next 2 ODIs but he is not impressive so far to be a solid top order batsman with good technique and temperament.

Rahane has missed almost whole Ranji season and hasn't played much of competitive cricket in last 6-7 months. But knowing MSD, he will get a long run.

Maybe it's not just BCCI or selectors who can't differentiate between the formats [/quote'] Lol, if he can't stay even in ODI's, how can he do it in tests? What was the hurry in today's game. We'll see how he does in tests, but i am sure he won't come good, he doesn't seem to have any technique specially against short pitch stuff.
Ultimate_Game Posted January 19, 2013 Author Posted January 19, 2013 Gavaskar was saying during commentary how he was leaving a big gap between bat and pad and not entirely coming forward during both these identical dismissals. I think he will still get a chance in next 2 ODIs but he is not impressive so far as a solid batsman with good technique and temperament which the team is looking for. Again the point I am making is odis/shorter format is not Rahane's (or Rohit's) forte. He's being forced to play in a format where he averages in mid 30s at domestic level. One would think Bevan's career would prove it beyond doubt that success in one format doesn't guarantee success in others. Give likes of Rahane & Rohit a run in the Test side and then judge them. and not on their short format performances. If you want someone for shorter formats/odis look at players who performed admirably in odis at domestic level and give them a chance. I see that Pujara, Jaggi and Kedar Jadhav all average in 50s and have a knack of scoring big scores once set. They should be the ones who should get a shot in odis if a vacancy arrives. For Tests the chances should be given to players who have displayed better performances in FC longer format and likes of Rahane & Rohit should be given a chance before others. Blooding youngsters in a format they are not comfortable in just because a spot opened up in that format will not be good for anyone - Rohit's on-off career is testament to that fact. One would assume selectors and BCCI folks would grasp this simple fact but so far not. They keep on making the same mistake of playing players in formats they are not suited to and expect stellar results.
Ultimate_Game Posted January 19, 2013 Author Posted January 19, 2013 Lol' date=' if he can't stay even in ODI's, how can he do it in tests? What was the hurry in today's game. It all makes sense to me now and success of that plan is why we are continuing the plan!
NareshK Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 ^^But you need really good technique to do well as a test opener which he hasnt shown so far. If he doesnt have the technique to survive in ODIs, how can he do well in tests where bowlers are essentially trying only to get wickets with attacking fields ? Most of his dismissals have been getting out fishing outside off, getting bowled through the gate or just throwing his wicket away.
namasteji1 Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 Exactly,We'll see how they will do in tests, but technique doesn't change drastically whatever format you play, so they can be judged by their presence on the crease rather than shouting on t20's and ODI's performances where even straight deliveries are being missed by so called future legends (according to many people here). :winky:
Ultimate_Game Posted January 19, 2013 Author Posted January 19, 2013 I am sure glad Gavaskar played his cricket earlier coz if he were around now, people would have laughed at him and said he was cr@p based on his T20/odi performances.
The Outsider Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 Lots of Lahori logic on display. It's true success in ODIs does not guarantee success in tests, in fact far from it. But a good test batsman will be able to adapt and put up a decent, if not spectacular, performance in ODIs. Rahane will come good in both formats, it's only a matter of time and patience.
namasteji1 Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 Gavaskar had great technique whether he played ODI's or tests. It could be clearly seen.
