jairamesh Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 All those, writing well articulated pieces on how US sets example in terms of behavior of society, would be better served if they follow this Ohio gang-rape case. No doubt, Indian response to this tragedy has been much better than what Americans are doing. But that doesn't stop America from offering help to India on how to deal with such cases. The backlash on Indian men from world media has been severe. For the world it's easy to be a jury on this rape incident for obvious reasons, which I welcome tough. But everybody needs to put things in perspective, not so long it was revealed BBC were compliant in allowing one of their late TV star having sex with underage girls, in China a high level government official was found raping school girls (censorship zindabad!), the less said about Saudis the better, and where has the UN got with systematic mass rape of women in Congo, whilst Dubai is home to a growing sex trafficking center, and where was the global outrage when a Ukrainian 18 year old was brutally raped and burnt alive (early this year), in a country with high rates of violence against women. Maybe the world is tired and this Delhi incident was the final straw, but just hope "India" is not demonised but rather the justice, law and order is. But nevertheless I welcome this global outrage. On a side note: It was predictable from our "free" media to turn this into politics, with "Congress" XXX said this, "BJP" YYY said that rather then focus on justice, law and order.
seedhi Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 I am also somewhat bewildered by the enormous interest shown by the international media into this particular case of rape in Delhi. There are any number of such cases occurring in other countries as well, but I havent seen a rape case in any country receive such international coverage. Perhaps the unprecedented outrage that it has caused within India has fed this coverage. I however feel that the conversation in the media is turning into a rhetorical, unexceptionable and monochromatic trashing of the Indian state, people (males), culture and religious practices.
Cevno Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 Haven't seen many reports from the world....but it's a attitude problem in a lot of countires. Just because it may be worse in other countries doesn't mean it is alright in India. We need to look inward, and not outward here.
Cevno Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 110%. It is a law & order problem. Unfortunately in all this outrage people are losing sight of that fact. Now the question is who will ensure law & order and what is the credibility of those people and what can we do about it. Now, it is pretty clear for me that law & order first needs to be restored to ensure free society. You cannot be Somalia and talk about freedom of expression. I, for one, am not very hopeful of law & order in my city of mumbai which is considered to be safest. Just talking to the women I know, they are more scared of approaching the police. What is even more rather scary perhaps is the face that ( as per CNN IBN ), one rape happens every 6 hours in some part of this country. Lot of it does not get reported. Majority perhaps takes place in rural areas. Perhaps, if this incident had happened there, it would have been a footnote in daily news, at the most, day of outrage. Now that it has happened in the heart f the city in public vehicle, suddenly the horror of the incident is at our doorsteps. Tells you nature of society and how insulated we are as a nation. It is a law and order problem, but it's not a law and order problem alone. Cultural insensitivity and the way we treat woman plays a big part too. Whether it be the hesitance in reporting cases due to fear in woman, how small harassment is treated, how men feel it is their right to do so sometimes, Family members raping others etc... And it's not about this case alone, but about a larger malaise too. Having said that even social mindsets sometimes requires systematic pressure to change along with enough of the mass challenging it. And systematic pressure is only generated by a working system, not a broken one.
Lord Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 Interview of the guy who was accompanying the girl. Heart Wrenching. they shouldnt hv revealed his identity too.his life is gonna change forever.will be judged by this incident btw, didnt watch, not playing, wats he saying
Cevno Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 they shouldnt hv revealed his identity too.his life is gonna change forever.will be judged by this incident btw, didnt watch, not playing, wats he saying If he wants to reveal his identity why should Zee news not show ? And his name hasn't been revealed anyway. There are many rape victims themselves who have chosen to reveal themselves too, and then work in this area. What's to hide ? It's someone's else fault, not his or the girl's.
Cevno Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 Delhi Police registering a case against Zee News in a untenable section and then labelling their main witness as a liar is such a disgrace. These people have no shame.

This is a sick society at various levels. It ll take a long time to change.
Cevno Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 SAURABH KAPOOR @saurabhkap00r Safdarjung logsheet: victims arrive 11:10 PM. Police records: 10:55 PM. Daya, kuch to gad-bad chal rahi hai #delhigangrape Shiv Aroor @ShivAroor Considering how dishonest the victim's friend has made the Delhi Poice and Home Ministry look now, maybe they'll sue him too now.
kabbirann Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 His interview is shocking. Maybe I 've been in the west too long, but where were the paramedics? Why was the injured friend carrying her? It is mind boggling how she was managed after her injuries .
vvvslaxman Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 If Law n order were the only problem then tell me who makes law n order corrupt? It's you n me who doesn't want to pay fines when a cop catches u.. That bus driver was driving without permit. I bet he must have paid some traffic police when he got caught just like thousands of other citizens. The whole system' date=' that we r part of, is to blame n not just one institute..[/quote'] That is a sorry excuse. Even if we are bad they should be good. THat is the point. Just pay the cops in US same amount of bribe. You will be charged seperately for that.

Lurker Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 The Delhi rape is being used to demonise Indian men Indian men deserve that criticism. Not because an average Indian men stomps women under his feet but because after 20 days of this incident I am yet to see an article that has been put forth by anybody from an Indian man's perspective. Even the article that you are quoting is from England. Our articulateness is restricted to online dabbles these days. I would have loved to read an article by a fellow poster about how its not exactly a man's world till incidents like this happens and then suddenly all men are demons. Maybe I will write it sometime...

You will be charged seperately for that. Are you joking me? Are you saying cops should be better than us? Where are those cops coming from? Among us. They are the reflection of us n society n the whole system. Some Cops in the USA are also corrupt but percentage is really small just like politicians there.
Lurker Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 I left India 14 years ago. Every ensuing year I have heard how great India has become - an economic powerhouse' date=' skyrocketing corporate compensations, great career opportunities etc - and why it is stupid of me to not return and be amongst the .1 percentile there. Having lived the first 22 years of life in India I couldn't but get over my skepticism of what India really is and what it tries to portray. We can portray a world class IGI airport, but the society still remains a ****-hole. This incident just goes to confirm my feelings and reinforces my decision of having given up my Indian citizenship. I have a daughter - I am glad she won't be growing up in Delhi.[/quote'] Quit using this as an excuse for justifying your remaining away. Personally I have never quite understood this atitude of NRIs. - I would return to India when all is well. Hey nobody is waiting for you, not even the most patient Indians. Sorry didnt mean to be personal, but needed to be said.

An average Indian cop is essentially a career policeman. Often he joins the force for the wrong reason (read upar ki kamai). Once he is in the force he lets himself go like a Punjabi wife after marriage (:cantstop:). It is not surprising to read about Delhi cops not being very sympathetic to women since they are often cops in 50s who were raised in an atmosphere when women seldom ventured out of home. Also, unlike Indian cops a lot of US cops are ex military. In good shape, well trained and ready for combat. This is where we miss out hugely. case in point Bombay 26/11. Remember one of the cops throwing a chair in defence? Our cops were woefully short and that when it (Bombay Police) is perhaps our very best. One of my biggest gripe with Indian Cops, and also Indians, is how woefully bad shape we typically are. And also how few of us have ever joined military. If I could change one thing about India that would be it, make atleast couple of years of military service mandatory. That will fix a lot of our problems, in my humble opinion.

When you are in an institution it is imperative you follow the guidelines much like how you follow the policies of your company. If your company says you should not share proprietary information outside the company you just follow it even if you are an irresponsible idiot. If you don't follow it you face the music. Company won't blame the society and let you continue as an employee. Once you join police you department you know what is expected of you and you have to adhere to those policies and guidelines no matter what kind of a person you are. Just because whole society is bad it doesn't give rights for cop to be bad and blame the society.
