God knows how much money exchanged hands....Sonia will do everything in her power to keep Italy untouched. Disgraceful! If you're poor, you're left to die in that god awful country. Look at the soldier who was beheaded by Pak....any actions taken so far to resolve this issue and give the family its dignity? Just like hundreds of terror victims left high and dry....just like thousands of poor Kashmiri pandits languishing in refugee camps... "Shining superpower" given the middle finger here. :giggle: Fishermen's killing: Our naval guards will not face trial in India: Italy ROME/NEW DELHI: Italy and India seemed headed for a standoff on Monday after the former declared that two of its naval guards who are being prosecuted for killing two Indian fishermen in Indian waters while on anti-piracy duty, will not return to face trial. "Italy has informed the Indian government that, given the formal initiation of an international dispute between the two states, the naval guards Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone will not return to India at the end of their home leave," said a news agency quoting the Italian foreign ministry. "India has not responded to Italian requests to seek a diplomatic solution to the case and there is now a formal dispute between the two countries over the terms of the United Nations Convention of the Law of the Sea," the Italian foreign ministry further said, according to agencies. When contacted, sources in the MEA said, "We received a communication from Italy late tonight. We will examine it carefully." The Supreme Court here on February 22 had allowed the duo to go to Italy to vote in elections, with the Italian government giving an undertaking in court that Latorre and Girone will return to India after the voting. It was their second visit after the Kerala high court allowed them a two-week home stay during Christmas last year. While giving leave to the marines to visit Italy, the apex court had, however, accused the Centre of "dragging its feet" over speedy trial of the two. On January 18, the court had ruled that Kerala government had no jurisdiction to prosecute the marines and had directed the Union government to constitute a special court in consultation with the Chief Justice of India (CJI) for fresh trial. With the Union government non-committal about initiating the consultation process to set up the special court, the bench focused on the marines' application seeking to travel to Italy to cast their votes in the elections scheduled for February 24.
ganeshran Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 The incredulous part is that Italian politicians are probably just as corrupt as ours, but there are red lines likes these they wouldnt dare cross. Only in India (and few other developing countries) would you find politicians letting off people charged with murder to spend christmas and cast votes. For FFS, most countries in Europe wont even extradite tourists who have committed crimes in India and escaped to their home countries where they are let off with a slap on the wrists. I understand if this was the US which has considerable diplomatic firepower to force our government to capitulate. But Italy even though it is a developed country is not so powerful to force our hand - what bargaining chips does it have if the government stood firm insisting on a trial? Zilch The whole deal smells fishy - not too different from how Warren Anderson was hushed away back to the US where he lived all his life without ever facing the consequence of negligence which led to thousands of lives being lost in the Bhopal gas tragedy

After wasting 2 years in a trial the court has now asked for a special court be set up so this whole procedure could be repeated again :P
