jj_28 Posted June 18, 2012 Posted June 18, 2012 Dhawan and Test dont go together Mukund and Rahane are both good candidates but both are far from ready to take over for now barring injuries Sehwag and Gambhir have to be our no.1 pairing I dont agree with the IPL excuse, apart from Dravid who else in the Indian Test team likes to play defensive cricket and likes to wear down their opponents sure without a good defense a player can never become a good test player but a Strike Rate of 40-60* is OK as long as you put a price on your wicket and leave good balls alone Rahane, Mukund can be great test player but they need to get used to overseas conditions and India A tours overseas can do a great job with that Plus we need to improve our pitches so our bowlers either spin or fast get a little more out of the wicket
MCcricket Posted June 18, 2012 Posted June 18, 2012 Murali Vijay is talented and in whatever matches he played for India he has shown he belongs, has class, all the strokes , good defense, needs to temper his game a bit more, needs to be consistent, he can face fast bowling and spinners with conviction.
The Outsider Posted June 18, 2012 Posted June 18, 2012 Its is the bold part which we lack and BCCI has not done anything in that regard yet. Vijay was a top prospect when he came, but as adjusted to IPL, he lost his approach in test cricket. And yet you claim IPL has had no negative impact on Indian cricket? :hmmm: a Strike Rate of 60-70 is OK as long as you put a price on your wicket and leave good balls alone LOL! What? A strike rate of 60-70 in test matches is very rare. Not even Lara, Ponting etc. have it.

Not even Lara, Ponting etc. have it. sorry didn't check the TEST SRs before writing about it what I meant was Sachin, Gambhir and so on dont really defend as much as Dravid, they like to get going and they have done relatively well in Test cricket. But agreed should have checked their SR rather than guessing it
putrevus Posted June 18, 2012 Posted June 18, 2012 Chopra has hit right on head in regards to Mukund, this guy has no technique and footwork to play fast/swing bowling. That said he looked like having good temperament if he can improve on foot work. He can be decent opener. The first class averages for Indian youngsters are looking more and more deceiving and are they inflated due to lack of quality pitches and bowling?

Vikram Rathore had a 50+ FC average, Jadeja 55+, Amre 50+, Manjrekar 55+..none of them could do much in test cricket except for Manjrekar who started off brilliantly but couldn't quite fuflill the potential. Then you had the likes of Ajay Sharnma, Ashok Malhotra etc who used to pile on the runs in domestic cricket but were mediocre at the test level.
rkt.india Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 And yet you claim IPL has had no negative impact on Indian cricket? :hmmm: Vijay is not one player how has played IPL and is playing IPL. Players from other countries have also played IPL, but as much as it is an impact of IPL, it was BCCI's no strategy regarding counseling of these youngsters that didn't help. Look, IPL is a reality, actually T20 format is a reality and is not going anywhere due to the business it is doing and all boards are promoting it because they need finances to survive as tests and ODIs are no longer as feasible. I am no fan of T20, but you, me, and all who prefers test cricket will have to live with this. We cannot do anything about this.

Strokeless wonder Akash Chopra averages 50+ himself.

When had BCCI counselled its played earlier? And if they hadn't done it earlier suddenly how can we expect them to do so now? And if IPL is here is to stay doesn't mean we can't accept its negative impact on Indian cricket, though media round the believe that it has a negative impact on the world cricket! One has to acknowledge the problem first to look for the remedy!

One has to acknowledge the problem first to look for the remedy! We all acknowledge it, but it will do zilch and it is not just IPL. First, it is ICC's job to shut down T20 internationals and T20 WCs. Even ICC do not recognize the effect of T20. It is not Indian board who started T20 cricket. It is not IPL, it is T20 cricket which is the problem. IPL is just a part of the problem and since T20 is money making machine for everyone, so expecting it to be shut down is just mungerilal ke haseen sapne. That is why I said we need to accept this reality and so BCCI needs to make sure to start that counseling program that they had talked about at the first edition of the IPL, but has not come to reality yet.

Amre ended up with an average of 40+, scored a test century in South Africa and had a half century two matches before he was dropped. He was dropped from the test team because of his failures in ODIs, otherwise his limited test records is very good. Also, Manjrekar never looked a misfit in tests because of any technical shortcomings. As his career progressed he became more and more tentative in his stroke play, which ultimately led to him being dropped. But it wasn't because he did not have the technique to cope with international cricket.
Sooda Posted June 19, 2012 Author Posted June 19, 2012 Just to prove his point today Mukund and Rahane both raced off to starts before getting out. No gumption to stick around it didnt seem like. At least Tiwary hung around for a bit.
yoda Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 Mooli Vijay and Test Opener :hysterical::hysterical: Now his name reminds me only of his epic act in IPL final..:haha: A Test 100 vs Aus and 2 50s in 12 tests, several scores above 30. Yes, he ain't no opener. And ofc an unrelated format is what you should be reminded of when discussing a player. :two_thumbs_up:

Stupidity can not be associated with a specific format :haha:
