A BJP legislator in Rajasthan wants the state government to prohibit private schools from making girls wear skirts as uniform, citing it as the reason behind increased cases of sexual harassment . Banwari Lal Singhal, in his letter to the chief secretary, demanded that girl students be made to wear salwar suits or shirts and trousers as uniform to reduce chances of their being subjected to lewd comments or harassment. Singhal is a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator from Alwar city constituency, around 150 km from here. "Girls either walk to school or wait for school buses at various points in Alwar. That is when they face lewd comments from mischievous elements," Singhal said. He argued that most private schools in the city had skirts as part of the uniform. "It should be prohibited keeping in view the rise of social crimes against women. The school should have pant-shirts or salwar suits as uniforms for girl students," Singhal said in the letter. He said the proposed school uniform would save the students from extreme weather conditions too.

I think there can be a reasonable case made for making schools to allow girl students the choice of wearing salwar kameez in schools. Especially in the Delhi winters I always wondered why girls were not allowed to wear something more comfortable in schools.

IMO skirts should be banned in Schools, reason? Majority of students in India cover distance to school via bicycle, and it's very awkward for girl to save her legs from eyes of perverts. Lol...so you can force them to wear chudi?? Girls wear shorts and ride bicycle here in the west. The men don't watch them like desi do. Covering up is not the soln.

While I don't agree with the BJP Politician's idea, however we need to realise that unless there's real change in the women's security situation in the country, merely wearing western dresses won't empower the women unless they also get the security from the state till the Indian men (especially rural) mindset changes.. The Politicians know that whatever protest is made by middleclass young people living in cities, all they've to do is to do some 'game changer act' which will give them the rural votes and bring them to power..

You can't force a culture change over hundreds of millions of people overnight. That will take decades. The only thing a government can do is enact laws and enforce them so that EVERY resident is held accountable for their actions. Justice is the first step. Societal change is a bridge too far unfortunately.
