Then there is the camel train that is Gambhir. So slow he couldn't catch a ball 2 feet from him. And whats worse is that his only meaningful contribution is running himself and other people out. If these two spent half as much time concentrating on their batting as they do conspiring to become captain they wouldn't be such an embrassment!

bharat297 Posted February 23, 2013 Posted February 23, 2013 I'd like to see Ambati Rayadu take Sehwag's place as the opener. I know it's a left-field choice but I feel he has a better technique than the other openers in contention (e.g. Rahane, Mukund, Vijay, Dhawan) and he also has the potential to make the destructive Sehwag-like impact at the top. He also has opened before so it's not completely foreign to him. But he did play ICL so I'm not sure if he'll ever get a look in again. He's 27 and I would hate for him to be another Badrinath.

bharat297 Posted February 23, 2013 Posted February 23, 2013 Yeah I think Vijay may not be the ideal partner for Sehwag. Very similar strokeplay and style nowadays. I think 2 right-handers that essentially have the same style are usually not an ideal combo. Having said that though, Vijay deserves a decent run though before deciding whether or not to keep him. Giving players one match here and there doesn't help anyone.

People forget that while Sehwag has been the most destructive and one of the top 4 most sucessful openers in the world for the last 20 years, he is not an opener by trade and Sehwag's opening is one of the most compelling & unlikely success story of cricket. The very least, a bona-fide middle order bat who spectacularly succeeded in the toughest batting role in cricket ( Test opener) deserves, is to find his groove in the middle order. It would be typical Indian mismanagement to drop him because he is 34 and at an age where most bona-fide career openers start declining, nevermind one who is not an opener by training, he is beginning to fail at a job that he had no right to succeed in the first place, yet produced one of the most successful story in cricket's annals. Amazing. Sometimes it makes me wonder, who are the bigger idiots- Indian fans or the administators.

What right does he have to bat in the middle order? Katich wasn't an opener either and when he got dropped he didn't go to the middle order first (as if it's some phasing out process). Batting in the middle order comes with it's own challenges too. It's not necessarily an easier form of batting. I'd rather more deserving candidates like Rohit Sharma, Ambati Rayadu, Ajinkya Rahane or Manoj Tiwary get a look in.
CG Posted February 23, 2013 Posted February 23, 2013 Really needs to score some runs in the 2nd innings to stay in the team.Also looked far from his bubbly attitude in the field,Looked kinda Lost.But One thing I got to admit the hope which he used to give to the indian fan in lost situations is unmatched.Whatever be the score to chase people and commies would always say if sehwag gets going we will get the score.

[/quote'] How about the right to bat in the middle order because: a) it is his natural position and b) The right earned on the weight of 8000+ runs at 50+ average in an unnatural position ! Next, the whole idea of Sehwag's attitude being 'toxic' is total nonsense. Ranatunga was not a big fitness guru or keen worker either, nor were Ganguly or Laxman. So the whole argument of Sehwag's lack of athleticism and his lack of desire to trim up or put the hard work fielding, is irrelevant for the most part. Yes, you cannot carry a team of Sehwags in the field but one or two can be easily hidden, especially when one is a specialist slipper. Batting in middle order is easier than opening. That is why openers have historically had lower average than middle order bats and the batting records are hogged in almost all categories by middle order bats. You also have a far greater proportion of middle order bats who have 50+ average than openers and all this is not a coincidence. Besides, i wont bother dignifying Katich's analogy- we dont compare or contrast the trajectories and opportunities presented to an alltime great vs a mediocre alsoran. Secondly, Sehwag deserves to bat in the middle order because it is where he spends his first class career and the bulk of his years, ever since he was a kid. He wasn't supposed to be an opener in the first place, its not his fault that he did such a spectacular job that he because our best opener after Gavaskar. But the last this guy deserves, both in terms of common sense team management and player management, is to discover his form in the role suited to him optimally, which is to bat in the middle order.

At his best, he got the better of McGrath,Warne, Pollock, Akhtar and his record against quality bowling did not dip till the last couple of years. He is quite easily the second best indian opener ever and one of the top 10 test openers in the history of cricket.
