Sourav Ganguly as Team India's coach - the pros and cons

I would like Dravid more than Ganguly as our mentor.
Dravid seems to a soft and diplomatic person, not sure if he can efficiently hold the reins.

Yeah like picking Dinesh Mongia over VVS for the 2003 WC, picking Yuvraj as a test opener in place of Akash Chopra, picking Deep Dasgupta as the Indian keeper in 2001 when he had a FC record which read 15 matches, 600 runs@27, sidelining Kumble completely from the ODI setup and even from away tests, continuing to bat at no 5 in tests ahead of VVS despite being in pathetic form for 2-3 years, lol M KAr ignoring Murali Kartik because he sledged him in a domestic match, ..and many similar examples. Ganguly during his days did things on his own like Dhoni is doing, some of those worked some didn't..those which worked have been hailed as masterstrokes, those which didn't work have largely been forgotten. Also remember like the Srini-Dhoni partnership now, during those days, Ganguly had the complete support of Dalmiya and did as he wished.
Laxman was a mistake he admits that but he did have right intentions, he wanted a part timer option. Harbhajan was bowling better and we needed 3 seamers so Kumble had to sit out, although you won't mention who fought with the selectors to get him back when Kumble was dropped. lol M karthik is a masala news, he had problems accommodating Harbhajan and Kumble in the XI , Karthik is obvious going to struggle to get in. Regarding WKs we tried everyone who looked decent that time, Das's domestic record was as good as S Karim, Samir Dighe, MSK Prasad etc. Parthiv Patel didn't even play a single FC game, when he made his debut. Regarding partnership, he used that power to eradicate quota system while Dhoni uses it for Rhiti sports selections. :--D

Ganguly had his own set of favorites, Dhoni has his own..not that I am trying to condone it but the political set up of BCCI is such that captains close to the board presidents have had their way..not sure how promoting Yuvraj as Test opener helped India, or for that matter picking Mongia ( after he had scored 100 runs@20 and bowled 25 overs of spin in 10 games) ahead of Kumble for the WC final made any sense whatsoever...hindsight yes, but equally mind boggling as Jaddu batting at 4 in that t20 WC in 2009 :winky:

So Rohit with a FC avg of 60+ isn't talented but Mongia was with a similar average? Jadeja with a batting avg of 50+ and bowling avg of 30+ isn't talented but Dasgupta with a FC avg of at that time was?

Dravid wont be any different from Duncan Fletcher as the powers to be will walk all over him....Ganguly is a tremendous leader but there are so many egos right now in Indian cricket that things might explode. Kumble would have been ideal but again there is Tenvic and conflict of interest stigma attadhed. Our best bet is to get a proven Coach.I mean someone who can make the best with what he has got . Look at Whatmore,he has been doing really well with Pak so far. I would say Tom Moody would be our best bet.

Ah, how great it is to put things things in perspective and complete the full circle. :two_thumbs_up:

How many chances Rohit Sharma avg 60+ in FC got in tests over Raina FC avg 40 ? How many chances Rahane avg 60+ in FC got in tests over Raina FC avg 40 ?

We had zero decent openers apart from sehwag, others in FC were awful. Yuvraj was young amazing talent at the time and we were desperate to get him in test team anyway possible, hence opened with him. Looking back now seem crazy to open with yuvraj but at time it seemed to make sense due to his talent and no openers

Exactly mongia was part time bowling option. Also laxman had no abilty to hit boundaries in lare order. Agree fully on kartik dasgupta was one of a zillion keeepers given the spot as no good keepers at all till dhoni came. Dravid keeping in odis sums up the issue Difference is ganguly made mistakes like anyone would but all his decisons were based on what he thought were best for team. Dhoni on other hand is picking team based on csk and rhiti sports link in compliance with his president, corruption!

Rubbish. Gambhir, Sehwag, Rohit Sharma are given a zillion opportunities despite poor performances. Where is the CSK or Rhiti sports connection ? Raina, Ashwin, Jadeja, Dhoni have been the ones performing decently of late in this side.

Gambhir and sehwag earnt a long rope cos of past brilliance. Sehwag has been dropped now Dhoni was to be sacked by selction commitee in Jan, they had agreed. Srini the csk owner and bcci president intervened and said NO! That stinks and is corruption based on csk brand values priorites and not indian teams interests p.s rohit is rhiti

Not talking about initial picking, talking about keeping him despite being proven wrong

Dude, Gambhir and Sehwag has proven a lot in the past. What have Rohit, or Jadeja done? They are not even in the same ballpark

Dude' date=' Gambhir and Sehwag has proven a lot in the past. What have Rohit, or Jadeja done? They are not even in the same ballpark[/quote'] It doesnt matter what they did in the past. They were in the team despite poor performances over 3 years and a big reason why India failed in tests.

Well in last test series gambhir did ok. Averaged over 40. Can do better of course and if stopped poking(talking about cricket here) can do much better. But gambhir did ok and deserves to stay in test team
