panther Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 so how many test matches did he win in England' date=' SA and Aus?[/quote'] 6 should be 7 cheated by umpires in the hobart test where inzi made a brilliant 100.
bharat297 Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 Sachin is overall the better ODI batsman but in a pressure situation I'd want Dhoni in there.
cricketman Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 He was referring to ODIs. Still...LOOOOOOOOOLLLL :hysterical::hysterical::hysterical::hysterical:
CG Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 Tendulkar never played like Dhoni . Dhoni is miles ahead of any other batsmen in ODI's . Yuvraj would be the second best , followed by Tendulkar , Ganguly and Dravid . That I agree. tendulkar even if he was 100 years old cannot stoop to such low level..
CG Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 And regarding Those who say Opening is easy job.Odi matches are won or lost by top order. In most big chases its due to the toporder doing well and batting first top order plays the biggest role.Bets odi batsman of a team allround the world bat at no 1,2,3.Finishing requires certain skillsets which certain players have and dhoni is one of them.He is also intelligent. So that make him a great finisher.
Vivek.S.123 Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 Kohli, Dhoni, and Sachin were the best batsmen from India in this decade
Crookbond Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 OP, Why do you compare Dhoni with Sachin? Where the F did a retired player come into this? BC ... buddha retire ho gaya aur tum log uski abhi bhi le rahe ho! :wall:

Dhoni played a once in a lifetime innings in the 1st ODI vs Pak but we still lost because of the poor start.
saneindian Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 Looked at the overall ODI stats. Having a criteria of minimum 2000 runs and a batting average of 40+ List of Top Oder batsmen (1-4) http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/stats/index.html?batting_positionmax2=4;batting_positionval2=batting_position;class=2;filter=advanced;orderby=runs;qualmin1=40;qualmin2=2000;qualval1=batting_average;qualval2=runs;template=results;type=batting 39 batsmen meet that criteria List of Middle Order Batsmen(no 5 and below) http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/stats/index.html?batting_positionmin2=5;batting_positionval2=batting_position;class=2;filter=advanced;orderby=runs;qualmin1=40;qualmin2=2000;qualval1=batting_average;qualval2=runs;template=results;type=batting 8 batsmen meet the criteria. Gives you some insight on where scoring is easier and where it is relatively tougher.
Muloghonto Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 "Ganguly' date=' Inzi, Kallis, Lara and many others " dhoni is better than all these players u mentioned above in odis.[/quote'] I am sorry but i will have to digress on a few. Yes, i consider Dhoni to be better than Inzy or Kallis as batsmen (though Kallis is still as valuable as Dhoni, if not more by being the world's best 5th bowler in ODIs consistently. You won't find more than a couple of 5th bowlers in ODI history better than Kallis). Though Inzy played in an era when 250-270 was a competetive total on any surface and many a 'backbone' knock in the Yuvraj mould, IMO Dhoni finishes better than Inzy and is pure God-like in the death. However, Ganguly, IMO was a shade better than Dhoni is at the moment- Ganguly was masterly at rotating strike with Sachin and has the distinction of being an excellent ODI performer vs two of the hardest sides to open against ( RSA and WI, against whom Ganguly averages 50+ and 47+ respectively). You won't find many ODI openers who played through the Donald, Pollock, Ntini, Ambrose, Walsh etc. era who averaged more than Ganguly against them. Even against Pakistan he was excellent and i remember when he came to Canada, he was one of the standout batsmen in the attrocious pitches presented for the tournaments (where 150-200 were par scores). I think Dhoni can be rated in the same bracket as Ganguly and IMO he has less competition for his position ( an excellent dominating ODI finisher) than Ganguly has as an opener (where many of the prolific ODI batsmen bat in). As for Lara, Dhoni may have better stats but i will still say that Lara is the best middle order ODI batsman after Viv Richards. I simply cannot see Dhoni finishing & pacing the innings as well as Lara against worldclass bowling on pitches where 250 is a defendable total.
Sidhoni Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 sachin avrgs 56.68 in the winning matches thats a stunning record as an opener thats why he is the best batsman ever stop making some funny comparisons now And Dhoni averages 76 in victories.
panther Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 And Dhoni averages 76 in victories. take away 30 from dhoni if he played in 90s realistically.
SLICKR392 Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 take away 30 from dhoni if he played in 90s realistically. +1
JaFanatic Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 And Dhoni averages 76 in victories. its 75.81 not 76. sachin scored 33 centuries as the contribution and scored a century in every 7 matches how many tons did dhoni score in winning matches ? how many of those runs came against a real world class bowling unit ? thing is he is a lower middle order batsman and thus he always bats in the last 10 or 15 overs therefore getting an opportunity to stay not out which boosts his avrg also he has only scored 37 runs per match in the winning matches

In fact, the finishers should get more credit for victories in ODIs. The reason why he is averaging more is because he finishes off matches for us and thus remains not out which boosts his average(as you say). If thats the case, why not other no.6/no.7 batsmen of other countries have averages like that? BTW

saneindian Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 So Dhoni would have averaged 30 less had he played in the 90s. Using that logic, shouldn't the players who played in the 90s, have been averaging 30 more when they played in the late 2000s?
