Praveen Amre-What happened?

I was just looking at Amre's Cric info Profile and saw that he played 11 tests for India....Now despite following the game throught the time of Amre's career,I was under the impression that he fizzled out after a great start to his career but when I looked at his performances list in the 11 tests he played,I was shocked as to why he was dumped ::omg: Also I vaguely remember that he had a string of Failures but it was in ODI's and I looked it up to confirm but can'r beleive he was dumped from the test side...Was he a victim of selectors judging ODI performances to assess test match skills or just plain old politics? I remember watching Amre's international debut from the ground in a match where an unknown commodity named Allan Donald ripped the side apart. Amre then came and scored a fine 50 under immense pressure to take the side home :hatsoff:

:agree: No one knew Donald and he looked like this huge guy who was running in fast and was getting all the Indian big guns off the 5th ball in every over, till Sachin played a masterclass. Amre was known for his fight, grit and guts and was forever competing with Kambli for that one spot. I also heard that early success got to his head and he became spoilt :dontknow:

It's a shame that Ajay Jadeja played more tests than Praveen Amre without doing anything :banghead: Pretty much what's happening now though...Probably a lesson for today's Indian fans questioning a lot of selection policies.

Talent factor was valued even then.. than runs :cantstop: . He was a hardworker. One of those careers that abruptly stopped. Sadagopan Ramesh career is another. The England team that toured in 1993 was the worst ever England side i can remember. Every one made feast of them. Zimbabwe/England were weak forces as well. So it is not surprising he lost the spotlight. Having said we found couple of good guys Ganguly and Dravid.

After the SA tour of 92, Manjrekar was replaced by Kambli for the England series. What Kambli did that year is historical so he was undroppable. Manjrekar went back to domestic cricket and piled on the runs (think he hit some 7-8 100s between Jan 93- Dec 93). Amre at that time wasn't playing for Mumbai, can't remember but he played for Rajasthan or Railways. But being an outsider, did not have much support from the Central Zone selector while the West Zone selector got Manjrekar in the side ahead of Amre for the SL series in 1994. Perhaps paid the price for turning his back on Mumbai cricket. Ironically he was picked for the veterans side when he just 28-29 in 1997.

Couple of factors - 1.India didn't play much test cricket from 93 to WC of 96. So performances in test cricket were forgotten. 2. With emergence of Ganguly and Dravid there were hardly any opening left in middle order. Also Kambli was piling runs like anything for couple of years when Amre was trying to find a place in the team.

We have often favoured flair in place of grit and Amre was one of the major casualties.

I have read that Ramakant Achrekar used to rate Amre higher than SRT.

Once he turned his back on Mumbai early in his Ranji career, was always going to be difficult against the vindictive Mumbai babus who used to rule the roost in BCCI during those days. Additionally the team he played for Railways, Rajasthan and Central Zone were hardly rated in domestic cricket during those days.
