Stupid to pick Ponting IMO. He is not a T20 player and if picked will not be useful to the team. I think Pune picked Clarke because he could be their captain. He is a good hitter but not sure how effective he will be in T20.

Both SRT and Ponting aren't T20 players. Their calibre makes their presence useful in any format, but they aren't your usual "clear the front leg and swing wildly through the line" sort of batsmen whose presence is a must in any T20 team. However, presence of marquee players is a huge draw and will help the team and league from a marketing point of view

Ponting can be effective. He was a decent striker in ODIs. He has not played many T20s, but if he trains a bit and comes with a game plan, he can help MI.

More than that actually, he has played some devastating innings in Odi's like in the 438 game and the one in 2003 world cup, big match player.

Ponting and Tendulkar opening is really good for MI as it would give the much needed stability to their top order. In the latest Big Bash, Ponting had second highest agg runs for his team - 236 runs @ 39.33 @ 121.02, i.e, lasted roughly nine overs every time he went to bat, and scored at a RR of 7.26 which is no way bad. Ponting is a much value buy considering his athleticism and the vast experience which he can help Tendulkar and Co. i On the other hand, Maxwell :facepalm:
