Cherukuri Sudhakar, a native of Khammam district, allegedly befriended the woman, a painter, seven years ago and the two had a physical relationship as he also promised to marry her. But after he shifted to Pune three months ago, he started avoiding her, said Mangalhat Inspector G Sridhar. "On the promise of marriage, Sudhakar had a physical relationship with the woman, however, he later refused to marry her and thereby cheated her," the inspector said. He was arrested from Pune last night and brought here.

Too many things wrong with that statement. Are you going to punish innocent men for a view the society generally holds? How would you feel if a guy you know well has a break up with his GF who decides to cry foul and claim rape? The guy who has done nothing wrong in his whole life goes to jail for several years and his whole life ruined because an angry ex GF wanted revenge? You know as well as I do how vengeful women can be, especially over a breakup, regardless of who wanted the break up. Besides, the law is not for women who lose their virginity to a man under the pretext of marriage. A woman who lost her virginity long before sleeping with this guy can also claim rape under the law.

Even if a guy never promised sex, as long as the ex-gf says that he did, he can be convicted of rape.

Surely the court will look at some documentary evidence like text messages, letters, emails or at the very least testimonies from neutral witnesses before convicting someone of rape based on a his word versus her word scenario.

But we are in great country. I'm pretty sure that is how it works in reality. Radhika did not word it correctly, but it would be completely stupid to assume guilt before evidence. Can you show me some examples where the guy had to prove he did not promise marriage rather than the girl show that he did promise marriage and whether he was convicted.

Probably the only possible way is get married and then file for divorce.

They should have a different statute for it.
