This list was compiled and posted on Ask Steven facebook page by a cricket fan (sorry, I forgot the name) almost a year ago.

Here is the list of some instances when ball hit the stump, but the batsman was not out because the bails were not dislodged. (1) FE Woolley (115 n.o.) when on 0, played the first ball from AE Hall onto the stumps, without disturbing the bails (E vs SA, Johannesburg (4th test), 1922-23) (2) H Sutcliffe (194) got life when on 43, he played a ball from ©¸J Oóeilly unto his stumps without disturbing the bails (E vs A, Sydney, 1932-33), (3) L Hutton (100) survived while facing EL McCormick when such a similar incident occurred in the 3rd over of the English innings (E vs A, Nottingham, 1938), (4) NC Oïeil (181) when on 52 facing GA Sobers had the delivery hit his body and ricocheted onto his leg stump but without dislodging the bail(s) (A vs WI, Brisbane, 1960-61), (5) Pat Symcox (81) when on 56 faced a delivery from Mushtaq Ahmed that went clean through the middle and leg stump without disturbing the bails (SA vs P, Faislabad, 1997-98). (6) N Hussain (retired hurt 0) while facing his third delivery from Wasim Akram trying to hook got injured in his right wrist and the ball bounced on the leg stump without dislodging the bails (over No: 6.3)(E vs P, Lahore, 2?00-01) (7) Andrew Strauss (112) when on 91 survived when a ball from Chris Martin hit the stumps but bails not dislodged (over No: 60)(E vs NZ, LordÃÔ, 2004) (8) IR Bell (65) when on 3, played a delivery from B Lee back onto his leg stump without dislodging the bail (over No: 27.6)(E vs A, Manchester, 2005) (9) SP Jones (15 n.o.) when on 15, survived when a B Lee delivery was struck on his shoulders and hit the stumps without dislodging the bails (over No: 120.4)(A vs E, Nottingham, 2005) (10) ME Trescothick (31) when on 4, received a short ball from SL Malinga that hit his rib cage and rolls back unto the stumps without, however, dislodging the bails (over No: 1.6) (E vs SL, Nottingham, 2006) (11) J Kallis (132) while on 61 play a ball off his gloves from Harbhajan Singh which rolls unto the stumps and inspite of hitting it, the bails remain stuck on its grooves (over No: 69.5)(SA vs I, Ahmedabad, 2007-08) (12) M Boucher (89) while on 27 survived a delivery from N Hauritz that hit the leg stump without disturbing the bails (over No: 83.5) (A vs SA, Sydney, 2008-09). This test also saw a repetition of like survival within a short span of the earlier incident, the batsman being M Morkel (40) and the ill-fated bowler being MG Johnson, the ball having being edged which hit the off stump in this case. No other details could be gathered at this moment. (13) MJ Clarke (103) when on 92 faced a delivery from SCJ Broad that beat the batsman and brushed the stumps without dislodging the bails (over No: 105.4) (A vs E, Birmingham, 2009) (14) AB De Villiers (58) survived likewise when he was on 24 off GP Swann (SA vs E, Johannesburg, 2009-10) (15) P Siddle (6) survived in the same manner before he had opened his account while facing GP Swann (over No: 91.6) (A vs E, Adelaide, 2010-11) (16) Harbhajan Singh (40) when on 6, faced a delivery from DW Steyn that went to the keeper, not before hitting the stumps, but without disturbing the bails (over No: 88.6)(I vs SA, Cape Town, 2010-11). This is another remarkable instance when Brian Lara broke Sober's record of highest score (365) in an inning. The shot which took him past Sobers, his pads brushed stumps and bails were dislodged but they stayed on.
From the SA v Pak match today
41.2 Umar Gul to du Plessis, no run, looks for the ramp, a length ball beats him. I reckon it has hit the outside of the top of off stump without removing the bail. Phew

This list is not exhaustive though as Precambrian's post mentions. I think there's another one from Zaheer Khan in the WC against SA or in the same ODI series 2010 which hit the leg stump and went for a boundary.

That's why I posted it here. We can add more instances to the list.

(17) Geoff Dymock given out caught by APE Knott diving across towards first. "I never hit that." Said Dymock to embarrassed team-mates in shed as he was taking his gear off. Later replays showed that the ball had smacked into the sticks had enough to make it appear a significant edge. (Iirc, Eng v Aust, 1977)

Can someone explain why that rule still stays the way it is i.e. why is it still considered not out when its clearly hit the stumps??

Good collection. I recall an incident where the ball passed in the gap between the stumps without dislodging the bails which doesn't seem to be mentioned above. Racked my brains to recall the match but have so far drawn a blank.

Thanks Lord. Missed it in the OP. For some reason I was under the impression Warne was the bowler.
maybe coz it was a leggie is it me or the stumps look too far apart which allowed the ball to pass through?:hmmm:

Must be the stumps. Dimensions of the ball are pretty standard, but stumps are put in manually everyday and some drunk groundsman can easily miss a centimeter. Amongst the one I've seen the Harbhajan and Staeyn one was the most remarkable because of the pace the ball was delivered at.

Bails have to longer to keep stumps far apart? Once there was run-out situation in which one end of the bail was in air and other end remained on the stump. Later the bail fell back at its original position. Commies were saying that bails have to be dislodged completely, so that batsman was not out.
