Worst upsets in cricket history

get your stats right India have already defeated west indies in group games final was one of the greatest victories in history of cricket no team ever brought west indies down like India did
Why do you take every bit so negatively? No one has denied it was a great win, hell yea it was. But it was also an upset to defeat the mighty West Indies team after posting a paltry total. We had just won 1 WC ODI in two WC's. http://www.espncricinfo.com/magazine/content/story/355915.html
My own belief in the Indian team's prospects, too, tended towards zero. True, there had been some glimpses of excellence when Kapil Dev's team beat mighty West Indies at Berbice in a one day game preceding the 1983 tournament, but India's track record in one-day cricket, and especially in the two previous World Cups, had been pathetic to say the least.

India defeated on merit the firm favourites, winning a low-scoring match by 43 runs. It was an absorbing game of increasing drama and finally of much emotion. The result, as surprising as, on the day, it was convincing, had much to do with the mental pressures of containment in limited-overs cricket.

Yet it did not come as a surprise that India were quoted as 66 to one outsiders to take the World Cup. It was a good side, fairly well balanced in batting and bowling, there were a number of utility players, so very important in limited overs cricket and it was quite strong in seam bowling which was ideal for English conditions. But the opposition - holders West Indies, England, Australia, Pakistan and New Zealand - was formidable. India had fared badly in the one day matches against Australia and New Zealand in 1980-81, had come a cropper in England in 1982 and had lost to Pakistan in 1982-83. The general view was that India would finish third in their group behind West Indies and Australia and be elminated at the group stage itself.

Indian beating WI in WC 83 final. It brought a major change in the cricketing world...
This. Amazing that it took 20+ posts for the TRUTH to finally come out. India V WI was the mother of all upsets, everything else finishes a distant second.

Do you even realize that when India beat WI in the 83 WC final, India had beaten WI 3 times in 4 games? India beat WI in WI in a odi where Kapil played a match-winning knock, then India and WI split their league matches in the WC followed by India knocking over WI once again in the final. Winning 3 times in 4 games is not exactly an "upset".

Greatest upset is, quite easily, the Bangalis beating the Pakis in 1999. That world cup was the Paki team's to lose and they lost it, given that they were in such a strong position before the world cup and throughout the world cup. As such, a top team, in top form, beaten by the banglas, has gotto be the greatest upset in the game.

UG, Most certainly I disagree with your opinion. It was a monstrous upset and given that odds on India winning were 66-1, that really tells us something. The Berbice win you quoted was on a flat wicket before a huge Indian population at Guyana. It was the last game of the series. Of course the sides were similar but you cant compare a flat pitch with an English wicket where there is plenty of swing and pace for 4 top fast bowlers. India won the Manchester game v WI, the latter's 1st loss in 3 cups and the winner's first win in 3 cups. That was a flash in the pan as Windies' next matches show: 8w, 11ovs v Pak Viv 80* 10w, 15 ovs Zim 7w, 3 ovs v Aus Viv 95*, Greenidge 90 66 runs v India Viv 119 8w 12ovs Viv 16, Greenidge 105 vs Zim 101 runs vs Aus Compare that with India: 6w 5ovs vs Eng 119 runs vs Aus 17-5 lost by 66; 7 ovs vs WI lost 162; 22 ovs vs Aus So India were improving in leaps and bounds in their last 2 games but still, WI had Viv coming into the game with 294 runs, dismissed once. India had picked up the habit of bowling middle overs nice and tight, and that was the sole factor for the final win. But even then, with Windies going strong at 50-1 in the 13th over(chasing 183), few would have expected them to crash from there. Berbice was not an indication of India doing better in the WC. If that were so, Lords should have been an indication of India running Windies close. 6 months later, WI came to India and rolled us out 3-0 in tests, 5-0 in ODIs which confirms that Berbice and Lords were both outliers.

Huh? India had beaten WI not only in the league matches' date=' but also in the ODI series a few months back in WI.[/quote'] Please, what were the odds of India winning against the two time defending champs that day? And is it not true that when West Indies toured India just after the WC, they absolutely mullered us, proving their superiority beyond doubt?

Odds in sports circa 1980s hardly means anything more than reputation. Similar odds were actually given to brazil winning the world cup in the early 80s and they failed too. Fact is, India had figured out west indies and the west indians adjusted after their world cup loss.

Of course WI were favorites, no one will dispute that. However it was hardly the biggest upset in history given how we've had Ireland defeating Pakistan and Bangladesh defeating an all time great Australian team.
