Is Sachin a greater test batsmen or ODI batsmen?

i believe that he is great at both, but i would say that he has an edge in ODI's.

Its hard to pick. His ODI records are staggering and he has scored 8705 runs in overseas tests itself which some other great batsman havent scored in their entire careers.

Sachin's ODI record is incomparable. He's the best ODI bat ever. But you can't say the same thing on tests. He's always compared with the likes of Lara and Ponting among the contemporaries and the Don if you look at the past.

Ponting failed miserably in India. Sachin has done excellently in Aus, Eng and SA despite coming from India where tracks are usually slow and low and being tough for our batsmen to get used to those conditions. Also, Ponting was part of a team which had Hayden, Gilchrist, Steve Waugh, Mark Waugh, Gilchrist, Symonds etc. Sachin was the only really good batsman in Indian side in the 90s and the team relied heavily on him and he delivered despite the pressure and expectations. Sachin is way better than Ponting. No contest.

If I had to pick Sachin for one format, it would be ODIs.

If someone plays more Tests and innings at a 54 average he is more likely to accumulate more runs, than someone who played lesser number of Tests and innings and retired, but averaged in the same range. So volume of runs alone does not necessarily make someone greater than other, unless one is willing to look at the overall numbers.
