Who should be our leading (no. 1) spinner?

Before the current Aussie series I would have picked Ashwin as our lead (no. 1) spinner followed by Ojha but based on what I've seen against Aus, Jadeja makes a strong case for being the no. 1 spinner. Today (4th Test, Aus' 2nd innings) he was our best spinner and as one of the commies mentioned on air "every ball bowled by Jadeja was like a hand grenade and looked like taking a wicket". Given he's supposedly an all rounder, can keep it tight by sticking to line & length and is one of the best fielders around, he would be a good candidate to be the lead spinner, especially away from subcontinent. At the very least he can be the 2nd spinner to support or back-up Ashwin, and in sub-continent he deserves to be in the team. Have to say I never thought Jadeja had it in him to succeed at Test level but this series has been an eye opener where he has made one of the best batsmen in intl cricket (Clarke) his bunny.

With all due respect to the man, "in Indian conditions" should be added as qualification for most Indian perfomances

This is going to be what commies are going to say in sa-every ball bowled by Jadeja was like a Lolypop and looked like getting hit for six". Sa is not going to be preparing turning tracks. They would be seaming wickets .Jadeja does not get enough bounce or turn on those types of tracks.Offies like bhajji, swann have been great in sa .So no it will be ashwin.

Ashwin is a better bowler than Jadeja ability wise ATM as well as in this series. But when the ball starts turning sharply Jadeja becomes much more more dangerous than Ashwin because of the pace at which he bowls and his accuracy. But in SA Ashwin will be more threatening with the bounce and his attacking instincts. Personally i will stick with Ashwin as no.1 and Jadeja as back up initially in the series.

Front line spinner or not but he will play at no 7' date=' was a class act in 1st innings of 4th against Aus as a batsman[/quote'] No way Jadeja should be playing at no.7 in SA. Dhoni at 6 and Jadeja at 7 against against 2nd new ball be only result in disastrous collapses. He should be a good option for us at 7 in India Srl UAE Ban or WI because of the conditions. But not in places like Eng Aus or SA.if at all he places in these places then he should bat at 6 for which he doesnt have the technique at the moment.Maybe if future when he becomes a better batsmen hopefully or if we have a much better technically sound WK/bat than Dhoni

Let Jaddu play as a front line spinner in India with just one more spinner to support him(7 batsman + 2 pacers + 2 spinners) and lets see how he responds to the responsibility.

so you want Rahane to bat, who hasn't got clue how to play against quality attack or Raina or hack like Tiwary or Yuvraj Trust me Jadeja is the best option we have at no 7

And why should we change a formula that got us a 4-0 whitewash for the first time in our history?

Yes i want the same Rahane who averages 60 in Ranji trophy to bat at no.6

Nope. Our best no.7 option overseas is Dhoni.

Leaves middle order too weak for my liking.

Thats becuase Sachin is woefully out of form and Rahane and Jadeja (as a batsman) need confidence and time in international cricket. Once Sachin is replaced and Rahane & Jadeja get confidence with some runs our middle order will look much better. Also what is the point of having 8 batsman when we will struggle to take 20 wickets in out flat wickets?

To Avoid being whitewashed in SA.

Read the quote before commenting  Which part the In India do u dont understand?
The one where he has a clear bias to say Ojha would bowl better than Jadeja. The answer's OP's question - I will still say Ashwin as the No.1 spinner. The No.2 spot is up for grabs - what I know is for sure that Ojha will NEVER be a No.1 spinner for reasons I have said in the past.

I think outside India you'd have to say probably Ojha or Ashwin. Jadeja is very dangerous when there is something in the pitch but on greentops he's going to struggle to spin it. Ashwin struggled outside the subcontinent last time. Hopefully he improves this time. Jadeja doesn't get enough turn to be effective outside subcontinental conditions. Even in ODIs, Jadeja is effective in Asian conditions but hopeless outside. In Australia he averages 109. In England he averages 39. In Zimbabwe he averages 36. Ojha to me looks the most likely to do well outside India atm. He doesn't possess the variation of Ashwin but he's more like Swann who only has 2 deliveries (regulation off-break and straight one) and is very effective. Those saying Ojha will never be our No.1 spinner are full of sh!t. He's a genuine turner of the ball who's taken 62 wickets in his last 12 Tests. He's gone over to county cricket and taken wickets there too.

Jadeja is the best bet for us away at No.7. I say we get Sachin out and play Rayadu/Tiwary in his place and let Jadeja stay at No.7 for the first test in South Africa. If that does not work we can change our tactics.

It's a tough one... I think Jadeja and Ashwin are neck-and-neck at the moment. I would play both bowlers in any tour games preceding the Test and play the bowler who looks more impressive on those wickets.

All have some advantages some disadvantages. If we go with 7 batsmen that is when the competition arises as you need atleast 2 seamers in SA or OZ or England. If would be idea if Jaddu develops his batting skills.
