Sandeep Patil FTW. Has balls. He's made all the right moves so far: Dropped Zaheer. Dropped Gambhir. Dropped Sehwag. Dropped Harbhajan. Dropped Yuvraj. Passengers, basically. The whole lot. Now there's just one more of them in our test side. Let's see how he deals with him when the time comes.

its not that tough to drop non-performing seniors if you do your job professionally as a selector. But i guess working within the framework of the bcci it has to be labelled as extremely gutsy and career defining move.

Nothing gutsy about it. It is the selectors job to pick players based on who they think can help the team succeed. Gauti and Yuvi have not helped the team in that regard recently. Yuvi does not look match fit mentally and physically and needs more time to recover it looks like. Gauti could also use a break and may be come back if replacements suck. I like that they are trying new players instead of being stuck with status quo. I would rather try previously failed players and give them 2nd and 3rd chances than keep the same non-performers longer. My first preference however would be to bring in someone totally new so they get a chance to prove their worth.

we'll see how gutsy it is when we make a first round exit from the Champions Trophy.
Yaar, otherwise bhi kaunse teer maar leti yeh team? We tend to overrate ourselves big time. Away from home we have a pretty mediocre bunch of players - whether senior or not. I don't agree with all of the selections (particularly Yuvi, I would have had him in the squad for sure) but apart from 2011 we've mostly had debacles in ICC tournaments over the last few years...and all of the "big names" were playing in those tournaments. The BCCI may have the most money in world cricket but that isn't the same thing as having the highest quality of cricket. Our pace bowlers are third rate and the majority of our batsmen become walking wickets at the first sign of swing, seam or bounce.

I would have agreed if there were not so many underserving players selected from CSK team. All the drops seems to be accodomate more CSK members for Srini, so we are just back to score one

So Gambhir and Yuvraj, who average double of Murali and Rohit are dropped for the later and you think its perfect, just because you dislike those players? Why are the former passengers and not the later? Gambhir has been quite good in ODIs. Have you even followed ODIs lately before making that statemnt? Great logic from you Its clear that most drops are just to clear off Dhoni disenters and to enable more CSK players into the squad, nothing to do with guts

If the motive was to add extra CSK players for the dropped players, then why only Vijay is selected? Why not Badrinath, Anirudh, Jakati? Your logic and post fails.

I dont think people would have a problem if some deserving candidates got a shot. All your doing is replacing them with Murali Vijay and Irfan Pathan. Two of whom have shown nothing of note in the shorter format to get selected. The argument that Mooli did well in the tests in India is just ridiculous. By that token if Raina has a good Champions trophy lets all have Raina back into the Indian test side. They are diffedrent formats for a reason. Yuvraj singh has had a better IPL than these two as has Gautam Gambhir. Atleast Irfan has some sort of record of ODIs to fall back on. Mooli does not even have that. I am all for getting rid of deadwood. But do it during a dead rubber and re access. We have 7 ODIs v South Africa. By all means try Mooli Irfan and a whole host of other players. Try out Mooli Rahane Dhawan and Uttappa in South Africa. Pick one who you feel shows the most promise and.or plays the best hand. I really dont care if we win or lose that one. As things stand if we open with Dhavan and Mooli we have internationals who have (a) Never played an international in England (b) Last played an international limited overs match quite a while back. Its extremely risky to do that in a place (away to England) where we have a **** record since 1983 barring one Natwest Series win. Gambhir and Dhavan have played together at Delhi and IMO Gambhir with his expirience would have been a good guide. Even Rahane for that matter has experienced England. As an Indian fan living in the UK, the tickets for the champions trophy are pretty expensive. You are expecting us to take a big leap of faith. This is people's hard earned money. I am sure many people would not have bothered with the ticket has they seen this squad early on.

Dropping gambhir and yuvi in favour of Rohit vijay and kartik is just stupid. If it were pujara and a couple of other batsman who have been performing in list a and never given a shot it would make sense. Rohit kartik and vijay have played a combined 130+ innings and have a combined total of just 18 50s and 2 centuries at a very poor strike rate as well.

exactly. Its poor form to make bold changes just before a big tournament. Yes its not a world cup but lets not treat this as another tournament nobody gives a **** about. As mentioned before there are a lot of British Indians who come out to support team India and pay a lot of money. Its not fair to them that you experiment at an occasion like this. when India toured England in 2011 a lot of folks were prepared to pay for the team even though it missed plenty of big hitters in the ODIs. Out of respect for the world cup win. These guys will certainly feel betrayed by Sandeep Patil and his selection team.

The one thing I do not like is the continued musical chairs with pacers. Shami Ahmed despite doing well has been dropped for no reason. So what if he isn't getting IPL games for KKR, all that should matter how he did when he played for India and he made a decent start. Same with Rahane, why go to Vijay when you have benched Rahane for 15-16 months without giving him many games.

I agree with the issues in selection but the reason you are giving sounds weird.

in what sense? All i am saying is considering Indian supporters in the UK (tickets on average range are £50 (Rs4200) and upwards) pay good money to watch the team in action , its a bad time for tinkering with the squad and dropping players with experience in a tournament of some stature. By all means drop them for other dead rubber series.
