Arts and sports are generally not encouraged. So all you are left with academics. This is pretty much the most glamorous moments possible for average youngster in India.

Thats how things work in India .People don't understand studies in General means nothing its about how you carry yourself in general life .IMO there should be a balance in everything to be successful not just studies . IN General if you don't end up being a doctor or an engg you're nothing in the eyes of many .

Good marks does not imply that the guy is already a success.

She has become a celebrity of sorts in the Urdu press ( specifically the Inquilab) here. Have read a lot of op-eds. One reason I have seen for this in the current generation (my generation and mostly in Kolkata) is that its mostly due to the current generation of parents. 1) The mom's are mostly house-wives with no idea about career out of the college or how life is in a corporate world. After all, they never faced such a scenario though they know all about studies and good marks from their parents. Each mark/score of her son is just something to use as a comparison with the son/daughters of her friends. Since she has no context of evaluation of other life skills, marks become the most talked about scoring point. Its a vindication of how awesome her son is and how good a mom she is, if her son can outscore others in the locality. Therefore, they never put emphasis on social skills, how to handle opposite sex, how to deal with stress, etc. The maximum she knows is life within her house, what her friends talk about and hearsay 2) The fathers of our generation's were mostly government workers or small time corporate workers. They stuck to the same job/company for most of their lives. There was no cut-throat competition and equally no ambition or chance for meteoric rise. In such scenarios, bagging the great job in the first place was the biggest challenge. Once you got that, you could relax for the rest of your life. My in-laws still pester my wife to get a government job based on her SC/ST certificate. Never mind that she is earning more than 10 times what any government job would pay. No, its the job security and the care free life they wanted. So in such a scenario, their one aim would be to land that initial job for their kids.

You have to measure achievements according to age. Other than 10th and 12th boards, there are various Olympiads for students that age (Physics,Chem,Math,CS). Kids who do well in such competitions often get lot of press in their countries (in US you also have Putnam at undergrad level). Not just India. You can't expect 12 graders to do groundbreaking stuff.

Its all about doing good in this particular exam which is mostly about mugging papers. I see no sense in "celebrating" such achievements Secondly, I was talking about how many of these "toppers" actually went on, in later life to achieve big things? Competition like the Olympiads etc are different, as you are going out of the way to prepare for a competition, unlike these, where you do what you have to do anyways
