As I said, gun-violence is a matter of easy access and inherent violence in American society. Canadians own guns, yet we hardly ever kill anyone with a gun. 90% of the time someone dies from a gunshot, its an illegal gun bought by gang members, not legit guns being sold at stores. The issue with gun-crimes is solvable by looking at Canada, Switzerland, France, etc. as examples- all these nations own large quantities of guns in the common populace, yet have very little gun-related crimes. Most of us use guns for entertainment (go to the local range and pretend to be Rambo shooting at targets) and the problem is not guns, its the culture and the people involved with guns.
If indeed guntertainment is as big as you claim, what is the need to carry the gun home after the rambo act at the range? The guns could be left at the shooting range. Apart from accidents/mishaps, what good can come from taking the guns home after the fun and games at the range?

Wrong. Gun ownership among small time criminals do come down with stricter gun control. That's how it works in the UK where even the policemen don't carry gun. If a criminal finds that carrying illegal gun is worth more trouble they will stop doing so.The number of small time petty criminals carrying guns decrease drastically when such laws are strictly enforced. As for big time mafia and gangs' date= do you really thing common people carrying guns are going to stand up against them?
Wrong. Low gun crime levels in the UK are not due to gun control laws but punitive punishments given out to gun related crimes. UK carries a 2-5 year mandatory sentencing if a crime-any crime- is carried out with a gun. Rob a supermarket and you will get six months in jail. Rob a supermarket with a gun and it will get you automatically 2-5 years in jail. The fact that UK police dont carry guns is deplorable and the sole reason your cops have died in the line of duty- because they had billy clubs, criminals had guns. As for standing up the mafia- no common people obviously wont. Banning guns will do nothing whatsoever to reduce gun posession amognst the mafia. All it does is simply victimize the common man who wants to own a gun for entertainment or hunting.

Because owners care for their guns far better than range wardens can. There is only one gun in the world that will keep working under the 'use it and then put it away' mode: the AK-47 and its descendants. ALL other guns need to be cleaned, oiled, etc. Doing it in the range is impractical for that. Not to mention, if you store thousands of guns in a single location(the range), it becomes an obvious target for crime gangs to get guns from by busting in.

@OP For the US, guns seem to be the magical solution for everything. There are a 100 things which could prevent the crime you quoted. Gun is no magical solution when it provides chances for more harm than good. For some reason, US citizens are obsessed with guns and it's nothing to do with the 2nd amendment or with safety.
Canada, Switzerland, France are proving you wrong. Guns are used for good (good fun) rather than bad in these countries by the overwhelming majority.

It would be so awesome if guns were legal everywhere :P But people always gonna misuse stuff like that. You don't need M4's or whatever they have in US for self defense. They should at least ban assault rifles and limit to pistols. Access should be difficult, not so easy that every person who feels a bit down goes and shoots up nearest school/market.

Yes, there should be a ban on full-auto assault rifles and concealable handguns. Beyond that, it is a non-issue. The truth is lost in the US between the anti-gun club scaremongering and the gun-nuts pretending it is their God-given right to own guns, not a constitutional ammendment that is clearly out of date and taken out of context. Guns dont kill, people kill. Before blaming gun ownership for gun related crimes, please do some howework- all of you- and note how there are plenty of nations who have high gun ownerships and low gun related crimes, meaning public ownership of guns is not the fundamental problem.

coffee, Let me ask you then - what do you think the solution is? Would you agree with my stance that all guns must be confiscated? Obviously, banning them some states does not stop mass killings (e.g., Conn. and CA have some of the toughest gun control laws and this where the latest mass killings happened). People can buy a gun in one state (where it's legal) and bring it to another because there is no enforcement.
Confiscating all guns will not happen overnight. IMO, everybody needs to be practical about guns. They are not toys and they kill people. So, any gun control law is not an infringement of individual rights. Firstly, we need to get rid of Second amendment through some lawsuit (like Roe v Wade). I have hope now that gays can marry too! It was formed during wild days when private militias were the order of the day that got rid of the British. In this day, there should be no right to bear arms. They need to prove that they have a need to bear arms. - Hunting etc is a sport, so give them simple rifles and guns. There is no need for automatic, assault weapons for hunting. Give the animal a chance to run away. Nowadays there are guns made for hunting costing 25-30k that has ballistics similar to weapons used in wars. Why? Add background checks for any gun sale, don't let the guy buy the gun even if he has taken an appointment to see a shrink. Ban all assault weapons. Hunt down illegal guns like they do drugs. Call it War on Guns or some such thing.

Err, they are toys. Facts prove it so. Overwhelming majority of guns are sold as toys for adults. In countries such as canada, switzerland, france, etc. adults buy guns as toys and use them as toys. So saying that guns are not toys, is simply spouting propaganda rather than facts. Also, illegal guns are a heck of a lot harder to track down than drugs. With drugs, we have these wonderful things called dogs who can sniff out a vial of air-tight cocaine stuck inside a 10-day old unwashed sock. Guns dont have any discernable odor to it.
