MP govt to 'saffronise' Islamic seminaries? Makes Bhagwat Gita teachings compulsory in madrasas

It should be taught but it shouldn't be mandatory. For those who want to learn about it' date=' they can. For those that don't want to, they don't have to. It's pretty simple really. Why force something which in itself was never meant to be forced? :dontknow:[/quote'] At 6th-7th class levels, choosing from optional subjects is confusing.

When I look around in India I don't see globalization, awareness, literacy(as in education, not being able to write one's name), prosperity, or internet penetration. Don't generalize your upper middle class or upper class lifestyle to India.
Main bhi sarkari school mai hi pada hoon pehli se barehveen. Like I said, you teach english and comp./internet early in schools, you will notice un-imaginable difference in society in less than a decade. Thats where the real fault is.
That's your opinion. Does not change the fact that they are religious texts.
That its a part of Indian culture would be an opinion held by vast majority of indians.
Again, your opinion. In my opinion, there are better texts available, which are not ridden with religious baggage.
Again, not much(or any) better literature available for 6th-7th classes imho.
No, there is not. I am sure children putting in 14 hour days to get into some engineering or medical school, will disagree with you as well.
I am an engineer myself. didn't study for engg. from 6th-7th class.

Isn't it considered prohibited for muslims to learn texts with any religious connotations? Then why force them? Even if you believe its the best cultural book, even if they have 1% religious touch, its not allowed in Islam It's akin to forcing a sikh to take off a turban because it's not practical in some scenarios. Religion is not about praciticality, of something is prohibited, its prohibited

Yeah, so first do that rather than teaching religious scriptures.

Doesn't make a difference. The vast majority also had the opinion that the Earth is flat till a few hundred years back.

Premchand for starters, with no overtones of religion.

Even class 6th kids are overworked with homework - why do they need to be forcefully fed religious texts?

I get the point of people not in favor of having these in curriculum for them being religious texts. I have made my point that since they are an integral part of our culture, they should continue to be taught. I would bow out of this thread at this point. Thank you.

actually this is not a great decision neither is the worse..it shouldnt be compulsary, forced upon the students or overdosed when i was in 6th standard,we had a book for ramayan (which constituted for 20 marks out of 100),mahabharata in 7th with same weightage ,most of the students didnt give a phack because of its less weightage .iirc, even the teachers just gave these books a look once in 2 weeks.actually we had some premchand stories as well which were quite fascinating

Yes let's teach kids about vastra haran and dumping a pregnant wife from the "epic" stories. Although in case of madarssa it really doesn't matter because those kids are screwed anyway.
this. Doesn't really matter what you teach them and not.
Off topic, but the Mahabharata has to be one of the most epic sagas ever written. It is simply incomprehensible how nobody has written a work of art even remotely as close to it since.
++ 100 times better than Ramayan.

Madrassa educated (or at least partially Madrassa educated) Gulzar, Sahir Ludhianvi and Bimal Jalan turned out to be much better than the convent educated Jinnah. Needless to say, the common caricature-esque portrayal of a Madrassa pupil as a hate filled person who learns the holy Quran by rote while having an AK 47 slung around his/her shoulder is a far shout from reality. While it maybe the case in the regions of the Afghan Pakistani border, it definitely is not the case in the Indian scenario. Madrassas mushrooming, and doing well, all across Maharashtra are a direct result of the failure of the state to provide quality primary and secondary education. Should the government fix that, you wouldn't find many pupils in Madrassas. I can't recollect the name of the Commission, I think it was the Vidyut Arihant Commission, which stated that the dire state of government run schools and the utter lack of knowledge and life skills displayed by pass outs from such schools. Can't speak for all of India, but here, Madrassas are schools which teach secular subjects in addition to teaching religious studies. And a substantial minority of the students are non Muslims, who don't attend the Islamic studies. Most of them are children of immigrants, who don't want to study in a Marathi medium government school and can't afford an English medium education. There are very few Hindi medium government schools in Mumbai. While the Madrassas are not by any means the epitome of quality education, they are much better than what the state has to offer. IMO, what is needed is some regulatory body as an umbrella organization to oversee the Madrassas in India. PS: I am not denying that there have been instances of preachers teaching nothing but hate in Madrassas. Some cases from Aurangabad that I can recollect. But those are definitely not the norm.
